A Daily Word from the Word for Thursday, September 25, 2014
“Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said unto them, What do you seek? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master) where do you dwell? He said to them, ‘Come and see.’” – John 1:38-39a
The Disciples of Christ knew that what they truly sought was His dwelling place, because in seeking where the Savior dwelled, they would be able to soak in Him. Our Great Hiding Place testifies that “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” (Colossians 3:3, John 14:20).
The Hebrew word for “seek” as used here is zeteo (pr. dzay-the-o), which means “to worship God” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). We cannot truly seek the Father without entering into the place of worship, which is an abode of intimacy found only in the Secret Place—the Divine Dwelling Place of the Spirit of the Living God.
To “dwell” (meno, pr. men-o) is “to stay (in a given place, state, relation, or expectancy), abide, continue, dwell, remain, tarry.” How long do you stay in that place of intimacy, my brother? Do you eagerly expect to meet the King of kings when you enter into His gates with praise and thanksgiving, my sister? What is your relationship with your Father when you enter His house, family? Is it a casual checking in, or is it a true time of grateful, rich, and rewarding fellowship?
Our “coming” should be an ongoing response; as the very word, erchomai (pr. er-khom-ahee), is a constant progressive word. Whenever you see the suffix “ai” (ahee) at the end of a Greek word, it means that it is an active, right-now word full of action that is still in motion and building upon itself.
Jesus’ response to His followers’ request was and still is an invitation. The Redeemer has given us an open invitation to come and sup with Him. We should live a lifestyle of constantly coming and sitting at the feet the Savior, which is “the good part, which shall not be taken away” (Luke 10:42).
When we choose to spend time with Jesus, we are choosing the Eternal to sustain, equip, refresh, restore, redeem, and build us up for the here and now; which is indeed the better part, and cannot be taken away because “neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
Father, we yearn to come where You dwell. Help us, Holy God, to usher in Your presence by coming to Your abode. Create in us a deeper desire, a greater longing to be where You are. By Your Holy Spirit, show us what it means to truly come and seek You. In Jesus Name, we thank You that we come to You without condition and without restriction, and worship at Your feet. Amen and Amen.
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to contend for God each and every day. Choose to seek the dwelling place of the Most High God in your daily devotional time in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Purpose in your heart to sit at the feet of Jesus with no conditions and restrictions, other than to bask in His presence and receive His unconditional love. And continue to fight the good fight of being where the Savior is; for God, your Ultimate Resting Place, has already given you the victory!
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
