Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Caolina may have not heard of the problems former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney had by talking to conservatives behind closed doors when Romney shot himself in the foot by talking about his infamous 47 percent. Somewhat following in Romney’s footsteps, Sen. Graham is now faced with a recording of his own which was recorded while he was speaking behind closed doors, according to a Politico report on Thursday. Whether one calls it shooting one’s self in the foot or calls it a foot-in-mouth incident, Graham looks extremely bad with this comedy routine he should have not taken out in public.
Graham, who is considered a possible 2016 presidential candidate for the GOP, is now tied to a recording of a joke he made about white men, so reported the Huffington Post as well. He has admitted that it is indeed his voice on the recording. The South Carolina senator who is running for reelection at this time cracked a joke while speaking at a private meeting of the Hibernian Society of Charleston. The Hibernian Society of Charleston is an Irish-Catholic charity organization that reportedly has politicians stop by from time to time to deliver such ‘entertaining’ speeches.
According to CNN which obtained the recording of the alleged-jokes, Graham said to his audience, “I’m trying to help you with your tax status. I’m sorry the government’s so (expletive) up. If I get to be president, white men in male-only clubs are going to do great in my presidency.” If that wasn’t enough to raise eyebrows and get political tongues wagging quadruple-time, as he was speaking at that gathering this past month – which undoubtedly would have been filled with Catholics since it is an Irish organization – he made an unflattering joke about Baptists. He told his entertained audience, “They’re the ones who drink and don’t admit it.”
Though the comments about the white men and Baptists are being called Graham’s style of humor, there are already people who are finding his sense of humor less than appropriate – or funny. As could be expected, his opponent in the upcoming midterm election had a few words to say about the ‘white men’ and ‘Baptist’ jokes. Democratic state senator Brad Hutto, who is challenging Graham in the senatorial election, said that when behind the closed doors of a private club, Lindsey Graham let his true colors show. He stated that Graham is only interested in his own ambitions and the best interests of the wealthy donors he hopes will fund his possible presidential campaign.
Yet, CBS-TV reported this week that Hutto and Graham had their first debate on Monday. Atypical of contemporary political debates, it was said that the two candidates were cordial and complimented one another during the presentation. However, they are said to stand far apart on the issues as the election nears.
It has been reported that Hutto is not considered a threat to Graham’s reelection next week. However, such an issue as the surfaced-recording will undoubtedly come up over and over again in the future. For certain, it will be heard repeatedly if he does attempt to become the Republican presidential candidate in two years.
