Everybody in the Singapore Indoor stadium saw this coming. Earlier in the week at the WTA season finale, Serena Williams lost badly to Simona Halep. And in fitting fashion, Williams got pay back by destroying Halep 6-3, 6-0 in the final.
Williams won her third straight WTA final by avenging a loss to Halep earlier in the week. Fours days ago Halep had beaten the no. 1 player 6-0,6-2. Sunday’s final left no question as to who is the top player in women tennis.
“I lost to her a couple of days ago so I knew she was capable of playing really well. But I knew I had to play better if I wanted to win. I wasn’t even sure if I’d be able to play here and now I’ve won the Billie Jean King Trophy again – it’s an amazing feeling,” Serena said.
Ironically Halep could have kept Williams out of the final by losing in straight sets to Ana Ivanovic in the final group stage game. Halep lost in three sets and let Serena in to the final.
”I have no regrets because I did my job on court against Ivanovic,” Halep said. ”That was the chance but she deserves to win the title. She’s much better.”
Serena Williams captures the season-end top ranking for the fourth time. ”I just started training, because I had such a bad knee in Beijing I didn’t know if I’d be able to play here, and now I have won the Billie-Jean King trophy – I am so excited,” Williams said.
