On Saturday night, August 2, one NWA star will have a golden opportunity to get into the North American Championship picture. But he’ll have to go through 19 other competitors to get that shot, as NWA Houston returns to Cypress with a big 20-Man Rumble.
The winner of that battle royal will receive a guaranteed shot at the NWA North American title, currently held by Byron Wilcott. So far, seven of those names have been released. Jax Dane will join the likes of Raymond Rowe, Houston Carson, James Claxton, Shane Taylor, Matt Riviera, and Greg Anthony. The rest will be announced as the event gets closer. There is no doubt that Wilcott will be keeping a close eye on that situation, as he’ll want to know who is trying to come after his gold. This is a huge opportunity for someone to make a big splash in the NWA if they can survive the battle royal.
The NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Championship will be on the line, as “The Underground Icon” Scot Summers puts the gold on the line against Steve Anthony. Summers is once again back on top of the mountain in Cypress, in the midst of another reign as champion. Anthony will prove to be a tough task as challenger, after being very impressive in recent months. If Anthony stands any shot to win the gold, he will need to be able to adapt to whatever Summers will throw at him in two weeks. An upset wouldn’t even begin to describe the scene if Anthony pulls off the win, but the man behind the Kingz of the Underground will be more than prepared for the challenge.
Giants collide on August 2, as “Notorious” Shane Taylor squares off against former co-holder of the NWA World Tag Team Championships, “Godzilla” Jax Dane. Taylor has destroyed nearly everything in his path since his debut last year in Cypress, including a brutal confrontation with former best friend Raymond Rowe not too long ago. But he will have his hands full and then them with Dane. This will get vicious from the opening bell, as Taylor has nothing but devastation in mind. While he would love to add Dane to his list of conquests, “Godzilla” could easily be his biggest challenge to date.
In another match that can only be labeled as hard-hitting, Raymond “Death” Rowe goes one-on-one with “Cowboy” James Claxton. These two are no stranger to each other, and will be throwing punches from the moment they step in the ring. Claxton could add a monumental victory to his resume in Cypress, but he will have to be on his game if he intends to stay away from “Death Rowe”
One of the more bizarre situations as of late has been the emergence of the man known as Prince Kanu. Last month, Kanu shocked NWA Houston when it was announced he had taken over the contract of the ultra-popular Hambone. Now in an interesting twist, Kanu has now forced Hambone to step into the ring against longtime friend and tag team partner Chaz Taylor. How will their partnership play into this, as they will have to face off against each other in Cypress? Chaz is as puzzled by this whole situation as everyone else is. But when Hambone was approached for comment, he noted that he was not allowed to speak about business matters and that all questions should be directed to Kanu. August 2 will be very interesting as the team known as Real America could be headed for an international incident.
In addition to those matches, The Empire will be in action as well. “Loverboy” Matt Riviera will face off against “Mad Dog” Ken Johnson, while “Golden Boy” Greg Anthony will challenge the always tough “Texas Lion” Houston Carson. All of that will go down at the Cypress VFW, located at 21902 Northwest Freeway (Highway 290) with doors opening to the general public at 6:30 P.M.
A limited set of 50 VIP tickets have been released for this event, and they are already being sold. As of Tuesday night, only EIGHT of these tickets remained for the show.
