Thanks to a wide variety of popular supernatural series they seemed to be churning out a wider variety of them as of late. Thankfully a lot of these shows are hitting cable channels that allow them to push the boundaries even more. The latest, Penny Dreadful hit Showtime with an eight episode run that looked to do breath new life into some classic characters. Now fans that may have missed the original airing of the series can get the chance to step into this supernatural period piece with Penny Dreadful The Complete First Season on Blu-ray and DVD.
Penny Dreadful follows explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, and others who unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London facing off against icons of terror such as Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and Dracula in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul, even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations. The series sports an engaging idea that takes stories that have been told countless times and breathe new life into them with a new vision. The series features a great cast including Eva Green, Timony Dalton, Josh Hartnett, and Billie Piper that are all great in their roles and help to elevate the overall series to a higher level than it might have otherwise. The first few episodes of the series is a bit slow and hard to really get into as it introduces numerous characters and the world they inhabit, but once you get past the set-up it gets pretty good. There are some really great monster moments and plenty of twists and turns to keep any fan of the genre entertained. The Victorian setting always seems to add more credibility to these supernatural films as it all just seems to mesh perfectly into this time period and they have brilliantly recreated the look and feel of the time. While this series focuses more on the horror mystery of it all, there are some great bloody action moments that are a lot of fun to watch. They do some great work with the monster effects and designs bringing a classic feel to them while still making them feel fresh and creepy.
This is one of those shows that takes a bit to find its flow at first but when it does it opens up some cool possibilities for future stories while bringing some cool moments to the small screen. There is a lto going on here despite its short season and manages to keep things moving and offer up some bloody good twists in the finale that changes what you may have thought about some of the characters through the entire season and is sure to make the next season that much better. In addition to all the episodes from season 1, this Blu-ray release includes numerous special features including featurettes that take you deeper into the world of the series, as well as two episodes from season 1 of the Showtime hit series Ray Donovan.
