A number of Des Moines Metro restaurants are in the news this week. Here is a look at some news and notes from Smokey D’s BBQ, Trostel’s Dish, Trostel’s Greenbriar, Zombie Burger, and El Bait Shop.
Smokey D’s BBQ made news twice this week. First, restaurant co-owner Darren Warth’s competition barbecue team topped the national points list in the 2014 Sam’s/KCBS Team of the Year rankings. Warth won a number of the national barbecue circuit’s top competitions last year, including the 2nd Annual Kingsford Charcoal Invitational BBQ Championship and the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Grand Championship, and his team is off to a hot start again this year, winning the NBBQA Cookoff and a number of other Grand Championships.
In other Smokey D’s news, the 2nd Avenue restaurant will be hosting two sampling events today. The restaurant announced yesterday that they would be holding a sampling of new Pinnacle Vodka flavors on their patio at 4 p.m. this afternoon. Then at 5 p.m., the restaurant will host a sampling of Shock Top’s Lemon Shandy. Along with the free samples, there will also be prizes given away.
Trostel’s Dish announced a change to their menu and their kitchen recently. Former Django Executive Chef Johan Larsson, and the Iowa Restaurant Association’s 2013 Chef of the Year, took over their kitchen in June, but the restaurant just officially announced the change recently. Chef Larsson has already announced a number of new menu items for the restaurant, including Blistered Shishito Peppers, Tuna Credo, Lobster Rolls, Mussels, Braised Pork Belly, and Homemade Ice Cream.
Both Trostel’s Dish and Trostel’s Greenbriar will be holding fundraisers on Saturday, July 26 to raise money for Paws & Effect. Paws & Effect is a local non-profit that raises, trains, and places service dogs with disabled veterans and autistic children at no cost to the recipients. Ten percent of all sales at both restaurants this Saturday will go to the charity.
Greenbriar also has another Martini Madness event scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. You can enjoy 7 specialty martini samples for $20 or try individual samples for $3 each. All full martinis are $6. Reservations for the event can be made by calling the restaurant at (515) 253-0124. Keifer Brant will provide live music for the event.
Left Hand Brewing returns to Iowa next month. The Colorado brewery pulled out of Iowa back in 2011 when the demand became to high to keep up with, but the company’s beers will start to make their return to stores, restaurants, and bars in the area in August. Zombie Burger will hold a release party for the Brewery’s Wake Up Dead Nitro at 9 p.m. on August 5. Two days later on August 7, El Bait Shop will hold a tap takeover at 6 p.m. that will feature 10 Left Hand brews, including four special releases.
