**Morrissey (formerly of the Smiths) has an interesting new song which concerns the beat generation. It’s called “Neil Casssady Drops Dead.” See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0chGtsZEfB8.
The rather cranky cd that it came from (titled World Peace is None of your Business,) was recently reviewed on Sound Opinions. Basically the two critics did not think that the CD was one of Morrisey’s best efforts from a lyrical standpoint, and they accused the singer of misogyny
I have not listened to the whole thing but I have admired Morrissey’s wit and lyricism for a long time.
***Speaking of songs about poetry, I just had the pleasure of seeing Lydia Loveless for the first time at Wicker Park fest. The alt country artist wrote a great song about the French symbolists (who I like even more than the beats.) I will give more info and post some pics next time.
***** Lynn West will be performing at the Gallery Cabaret this evening at 7:30. Here’s Janet Kuyper’s notice.
The weather outside may be frightful for SPRING, but the weather IS getting better – and it would be GREAT to see you for an excellent night of poetry and performance art at “the Café Gallery”! Join me this Wednesday, July 30 2014, at Gallery Cabaret (2020 North Oakley Ave. in Chicago, ~ a block away from Armitage and Western near Milwaukee, with free parking and right by a Blue line el stop) from 9:00 to 11:00 PM for the Lynn West feature and poetry open mike! His shows are always unique, and I REALLY hope everyone makes it out for this great night!
This poetry open mike is from 9:00 to 11:00 PM, so come on out whenever you’re able to for a GREAT evening of poetry and performance art!
Also, there are links for this feature (links are even available at the “2013 schedule” link for this open mic at http://www.chaoticarts.org/thecafe) at the Chicago poetry calendar [dot] org – and if you have facebook, then YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN INVITED to the open mike from the facebook events page; if you’re on facebook, go to this event and say you’re coming!
At Gallery Cabaret <www.gallerycabaret.com>, they even have cameras wired into the place, and can have a live feed of the back of this venue displaying on a television for the front of the bar, so everyone could see the readers… And we try to video record the entire open mike as well as the feature for youtube and a weekly podcast! So join me at “the Café Gallery” at Gallery Cabaret with side-kick Bob Rashkow – I want all of you to come to this great feature at the poetry open mike WEDNESDAY (July30) at 7 PM!
