The year is halfway over and everybody seems to be sharing what their favorite games of the year are so far. So how could I not join them? I’ve limited myself to only 4 games for now, but know that I have played plenty more. A few games that almost made this short list that I want to give a quick shout out to are The Wolf Among Us, OlliOlli, and Child of Light. The following games are in no particular order, and for all I know the rest of the year could be so amazing that none of these games could make my year end list. Hey, anything’s possible.
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (Playstation Vita)
I haven’t played many visual novels until this year, but even if I had played a lot of visual novels before playing Danganronpa I still don’t think I would of been prepared for it. It’s an insane ride filled with memorable characters and constant surprises. Without going into great detail it’s very hard to describe what Danganronpa is. So to not do the game justice I’m just going to boil it down to this: It’s a social sim with murder investigations and court trials that takes place inside a school that you’re trapped inside of. If that doesn’t sell you, well I don’t know what to do.
Dark Souls II (Playstation 3)
While I don’t think this is the best in the Souls series, it’s still an amazing game. Dark Souls II is a game filled with so much to discover and explore that it’s easy to get lost in it’s grim and beautiful world for a long time. The combat is still just as brutal and satisfying as it was before. And of course the bosses are super memorable. I’ve already gone on about Dark Souls II before so I won’t go on too much more. Just know that Dark Souls II absolutely earns it’s place in the series and it worth your time.
Wolfenstein: The New Order (Playstation 4)
I was going say Danganronpa was the biggest surprise of the year so far, but actually I’d say that Wolfenstein: The New Order easily takes that spot. If you were to tell me at the beginning of the year that I would take the next Wolfenstein game seriously at all I wouldn’t of even slightly believed you. New Order has a serious story that tackles the holocaust in an interesting way that works most of the time. I had some issues with the shift in tone from trying to be a shooter to trying to be a serious story, but it worked most of the time. If you wrote off New Order because you thought it was just another shooter, I recommend giving it another look.
Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
Mario Kart 8 is a delightful game, and one of the best Mario Kart games in years. The tracks look amazing and are super fun to play. Mario Kart 8 is probably the most fair out of all of the Mario Kart games. If you get in first place and you’re good, you actually stand a pretty good chance at staying in first place. And if you were disappointed with the online in Mario Kart Wii, I’m happy to report that Mario Kart 8 provides a very smooth console online experience that’s easy to loose yourself in for hours. If no one has told you yet, you should probably get a Wii U.
