Kim Coates is the actor behind the hugely popular “Sons of Anarchy” character, Tig Traynor. In an MTV interview published on Sept. 16, Coates talks about TIg, what’s coming for his character in the final season of the show about the Men of Mayhem and he shares some surprising thoughts on what might be coming for Juice (Theo Rossi) and Gemma (Katey Sagal) – both of whom have betrayed Jax and SAMCRO in a huge way.
“He would [forgive Gemma],” Coates said. “If we think about six seasons of Tig Traynor, he was always bullets before brains. It should be brains before bullets. Tig has done wrong things at the wrong time by accident, and I think… if Tig were to find out that Gemma took out Tara, there would be an unbelievable sadness, but he’s been in that world. He’s lived in that world. He’s been in those positions where he’s killed the wrong person.”
For those who have loyally followed the show from its beginning, it’s not too hard to see why Coates feels this way. Back in Season 1, he accidentally murdered Opie’s wife Donna in a hit gone wrong. In Season 4, he ran over the daughter of a rival and set off a series of unfortunate events. Tig could certainly empathize with someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time, making a bad choice and even killing the wrong person.
Jax, on the other hand, seems to be leading the club into a war that Tig and the others don’t fully understand. They follow him out of loyalty but for Tig, this season has him more on the outside of things than ever before. He is struggling to find his place in the club.
“Tig, more so now than ever, is on the outside looking in,” Coates said. “Jax and Tig are always looking at each other. There is trust there, but it’s not as close as [Mark] Boone’s character with Jax, or even Chibs with Jax… Tig still doesn’t truly know where Jax’s head is at. I don’t think Jax knows where Jax’s head is at. This season is a big discovery for Tig, trying to find his place in this club. The past has been huge for him, and I don’t know what the future is.”
Whether Tig makes it to the end of the season is still up in the air. Show creator Kurt Sutter has said that two club members will die by the time the series wraps its final ride. Director and executive produce Paris Barclay has mentioned that the cast and crew are saying goodbye to characters on almost a weekly basis. Where Tig’s fate lies in all this is a major unknown.
“There were moments in the first five or six shows where Charlie and I would look at each other and go, ‘Wait, what’s happening? What are we doing now? What just went down?’” Coates said. “It’s just so fast. Guns are out, and they’re a’blazing. If someone would just tell the truth for once, and not have a secret or a lie for once, none of this would happen. If Gemma would just fess up, everyone would be safe. But she doesn’t, or she won’t. So we’re just killing everybody.”
The other aspect of Tig’s life that fans are waiting breathlessly for is his love life, especially since we all know Venus Van Dam is coming back.
“Venus is back,” Coates said. “She’s back. When Walton Goggins and I get to do stuff, the commitment that we both have… He and I just giggle when the scenes are over, at the fun that we get to have in the craziest scenarios. Two married-with-children guys. It’s an amazing time that Sutter has given he and I. I don’t know what’s going to happen with us in the last five episodes, but so far so good.”
At least we know Tig makes to the last 5 episodes! “Sons of Anarchy” returns with episode 3, “Playing with Monsters” on Tuesday, Sept. 23 on FX.
