The Seattle Sounders(14-7-3 45pts) will look to continue their winning ways when they take on the Colorado Rapids(8-11-6 30pts) Saturday 1p.m. PT in the X Box Pitch at Century Link Field. The Sounders are coming off a statement making 4-2 road win against arc rival Portland Timbers. With this being the business end of the season what you did the last game is irelevent( see Janet Jackson “what have you done for me lately’) so Seattle will be looking to continue it’s winning ways in a business and precision like manner.
With ten games left in the season, sitting atop the Western Conference and a two point lead over D.C. United in the race for the Supporters Shield , the Sounders are in need of momentum. The type of momentum that comes from winning games. “We are looking to make some separation between the other teams in our league and this is a must win game for us, forward Chad Barrett said of the encounter with Colorado.
For Sounders FC, the Colorado Rapids are a welcome sight for a team needing to gain some momentum. Colorado has lost it’s last five MLS matches and given up 11 goals in it’s last 3 games “The way we’re conceding them is really strange. There are little breakdowns that lead to goals, and for me, I
always preach about good starting positions,” said Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni. Sounders FC is unbeaten in seven regular season home games against the Rapids going 6-0-1 with a plus-10 goal differential.
Colorado’s is banged up and beat up. The loss of Central Defender and Captain Drew Moore to a season ending knee injury in Colorado’s 4-2 loss to D.C. United on 8/17 made a bad situation worse. In addition to Moor Colorado is without Shane O’Neill another solid defender.
While Colorado limps into Century Link Field, Saturdays match will about Seattle’s ability to score early and often. In the win over the Portland Timbers , Seattle pushed it’s two outside midfielders(Marco Pappa and Brad Evans) to the touch line which created time and space in the midfield for Gonzalo Pineda and Osvaldo Alonso to find Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey who roamed wild and free around the Portland defense.
Martins had two goals and two assist which earned him MLS Soccer player of the week and Dempsey had a goal and an assist. If Seattle is to continue it’s prowess it will need to get the ball to Martins and Dempsey early and often. The two will then need to execute on the chances they create.
