The Seattle Sounders FC(15-7-3,48 points) kept their wits about them and the patience paid off with a hard fought 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids (8-12-6,30 points) that enabled them to keep pole postion in the race for the Supporters Shield and Western Conference. Clint Dempsey’s half volley of a Marco Pappa cornerkick in the 52nd minute gave Sounders FC the lone goal they needed to make it two wins in a row in MLS play.
Demspey’s 11th goal of the season not only gave the Sounders the lead but it brought back to life the 38,934 home fans who had fallen asleep after a lackluster first half that saw more fouls than shots on goal by the two MLS clubs. If your counting at home, Seattle had the lone shot on goal for both teams to go with six fouls to Colorado’s nine. With fan interest revived and their voices rocking the stadium, Seattle spend the rest of the game on the front foot looking for a second goal but the attempts ended in vain.
While the second goal never came, Sounder FC Coach Sigi Schmid was happy with the result, ” I thought in the first half we didn’t quite spread the game enough. In the second half, we spread the game more and got in behind them more with better looks on goal. We scored off the set piece and sometimes games like that come down to set pieces. I’m proud of the fact that we got a shutout. I’m proud of the fact that it was a victory that we had to grind out coming off an emotional game last week, so I’m happy with the result.”
- Colorado lost its sixth straight, tying the franchise record set in 1999 and matched in 2012. The Rapids, who haven’t won since beating Chivas USA 3-0 on July 25, have been shut out three times and outscored 16-6 during the losing streak.otes:
- Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei had his league-leading eighth shutout.
- Rapids goal keeper Joe Nasco made five saves in his first MLS appearence
