When is the last time you went to a coffee shop to get a beer? Starbucks is in the process of testing a new latte that is inspired by Guinness beer according to a September 22, 2014 report by Boston.com. The drink, dubbed as the “Dark Barrel Latte” does not contain alcohol but instead uses flavored syrup that tastes like the dark stout beer, Guinness. So far the drink has elicited a wide range of responses from those who love it to those who are just plain horrified by the thought of drinking a latte that tastes like a dark beer.
Currently, the Guinness inspired latte is only available in select markets. People who have tried the drink in those markets have taken to Twitter to voice their opinions.
One Twitter user, @jesslhennessey, loved the latte and called for Starbucks to make it available everywhere. She Tweeted, “Please @Starbucks carry the dark barrel latte everywhere! Just had one in Columbus. Not usually a fan of sweet flavored bev but loved this!”
On the other side of the coin, Twitter user @mckennamiller5, Tweeted a very emphatic warning to her followers saying, “Warning: don’t get the dark barrel latte from Starbucks.” Maybe she’s just not a beer fan? Or it could be that there are people everywhere who feel the same way she does about mixing beer and coffee.
When most people think about Starbucks they think about grabbing a coffee on the way to work or meeting up with a friend over one of their famous Pumpkin Spice lattes. It is unlikely they are stopping off at the popular coffee shop to grab a coffee that tastes like beer first thing in the morning.
Some people will be sad to know, the Dark Barrel Latte does not contain any alcohol. The taste is derived solely from the flavored syrup that is used to make the drink. There is a sweet ending for those who are interested in trying the latte. It is topped with sweet whipped cream and a caramel drizzle that pairs perfectly with the Guinness taste of the hot beverage.
There is no word yet on whether Starbucks will roll this drink out on a large scale and make it a staple in the fall specialty menu and the jury is still out on whether people even want that to happen. There is definitely a love/hate relationship with this beverage amongst people who have tried it so far.
Which side of the coin do you come down on? If you have tried the Dark Barrel Latte what is your opinion? If you haven’t tried it, what do you think of the idea? Sound off in the comments below and let it be known what you think about this idea Starbucks is testing.
