Lois Lerner must, at a minimum, go into the bucket of unsavory government executives. On all appearances and with facts emanating from countless testimonies and analysis, she was an abuser of her powers and office. That is bad.
Next, she used her powers to disrupt the American political system. It is that motivation which is the “wrong” in her performance. It may be that the 501(c) 3 political organizations founded on behalf of conservatives to advance the Tea Party were living on the edge of legality. But, declaring war against them by the IRS was inappropriate and abusive.
More smoke pours from Lois Lerner’s gun as her emails “disappeared,” and while at least one indicates how she contemplated launching political attacks such as against Senator Grassley.
The real question from this pile of burning trash is who ignited the fire? How did Lois Lerner enter her high office? How did she infiltrate government by the people? She was selected for her “integrity and judgment” apparently.
Go back to 2005 (Pre-Obama)
“Lois G. Lerner Selected as Director of IRS Exempt Organizations Division
IR-2005-148, Dec. 22, 2005
WASHINGTON — Lois G. Lerner has been selected as the director of the Exempt Organizations Division of the Internal Revenue Service. In this position, she will be responsible for administering and enforcing the tax laws that apply to more than 1.8 million organizations recognized by the IRS as exempt from tax.
“Protecting the integrity of tax-exempt organizations is an important part of our enforcement program,” said IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson. “Lois’s background, including her work for the Federal Election Commission, qualifies her for this new assignment.”
Before this appointment, Lerner had been the director of the Exempt Organizations Rulings & Agreements Division, where she was responsible for the EO determinations letter program, public guidance and technical assistance for IRS agents conducting examinations of tax-exempt organizations. Lerner came to the IRS in 2001 from the Federal Election Commission, where she was Associate General Counsel for Enforcement and Acting General Counsel. She replaces Martha Sullivan, who will retire from the IRS at the end of December.
“Lois is an integral part of the EO team and has successfully increased the IRS presence in the exempt community,” said Steven T. Miller, Commissioner of the IRS Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division, of which EO is a part. “Her integrity, skills and judgment are exceptional and will allow us to continue to provide improved service and enhanced enforcement of the tax laws.”
Lois Lerner isn’t an ignorant individual. She is a trained hired gun.
“Lerner was a staff attorney in the criminal division at the Department of Justice before joining the FEC’s general counsel’s office in 1981. She was appointed head of the enforcement division in 1986, according to a 2000 FEC press release announcing her appointment as temporary acting general counsel for the FEC. She graduated from Northeastern University and earned her law degree at the Western New England College of Law, according to the release.”
Where there is smoke there is fire. Fire, fire, fired!

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official who apologized for targeting conservative nonprofit groups for extra scrutiny is married to an attorney whose firm hosted a voter registration organizing event for the Obama presidential campaign, praised President Obama’s policy work, and had one of its partners appointed by Obama to a key ambassadorship.
IRS Exempt Organizations Division director Lois G. Lerner, who has been described as “apolitical” in mainstream press coverage of the IRS scandal, is married to tax attorney Michael R. Miles, a partner at the law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan. The firm is based in Atlanta but has a number of offices including in Washington, D.C., where Miles works.”

“New IRS Scandal: Lois Lerner Thought About Doing Something, Then Didn’t Do It
By David Weigel
Like many people who were supposed to be finishing something, I wasted a little time on Facebook today, and came across a Republican friend’s reaction to a new break in the IRS scandal. This, he said, was the story “going nuclear”—this discovery by the Ways and Means Committee that there was a “push to audit Senator Chuck Grassley.”
Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) announced the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) targeting of conservative individuals includes a sitting United States Senator. According to emails reviewed by the Committee under its Section 6103 authority, which allows the Committee to review confidential taxpayer information, Lois Lerner sought to have Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) referred for IRS examination.
“We have seen a lot of unbelievable things in this investigation, but the fact that Lois Lerner attempted to initiate an apparently baseless IRS examination against a sitting Republican United States Senator is shocking,” said Camp. “At every turn, Lerner was using the IRS as a tool for political purposes in defiance of taxpayer rights.”
