Some people just get it. Animals aren’t just pets, and pets are really family. And where parents of fur-babies go, their four-legged children must go, too. This means any new place to where that animal-loving human happens to move. So it’s good news day for pet-parents. This morning at 10:00 a.m. PT, Swapt, “a platform that helps renters find the perfect apartment with reviews, tips, and warnings from real renters, and the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced they are teaming up to help San Francisco renters and pets find better homes.”
It gets better. In addition to helping people find those pet-friendly homes, Swapt will donate $1 to the SF SPCA for every review posted by a user informing all of rentals that have already opened their doors to four-legged family members. Those properties will be signified by a SF SPCA seal making it easier for those with pets to decide where to rent. That’s a big win for pets, the SF SPCA, and rental properties all the way around.

Swapt co-founder and COO, Michael Downing explains “we can track every user that is referred from the SF SPCA – this includes their website as well as any social media posts or emails surrounding the partnership. When those users write reviews, it automatically triggers a payment to the SF SPCA.”
So what, exactly, brought these two entities together? According to Downing, “The more we chatted with Mandy Newkirk of the SF SPCA, the more we realized how natural of a partnership this could be. In the same way that Swapt helps renters find the best places to live based on accurate information and renter reviews, the SF SPCA’s mission is to do the same for pets. By identifying which properties in SF are pet friendly, the partnership will aim to ease the burden on pet owners looking for apartments, as well as finding the best possible homes for those pets currently residing at the SF SPCA.”
Jennifer Wilson, SFSPCA Marketing and Communications Manager added “We hope that tools like Swapt will help people with pets find pet-friendly housing and give them the leg up in this incredibly competitive market. Shelters everywhere take in beloved animals that are not allowed in residential buildings, perpetuating the cycle of animal homelessness. Our goal is to end that cycle – hats off to Swapt for highlighting pet friendly options.”
At least now, in one major city, families with pets can find homes with greater ease than ever before. It could start a new trend as the success of the program continues to prove what renters really want; a home where their best furry friend(s) are welcome. The partnership starts today and will extend indefinitely. If you live in the San Francisco area, and are looking for a new home to rent for you and Fido and Fifi, too, check out the listings at Swapt.
