SWAT teams in California converged on a home near Sacramento and arrested a man accused of killing a young mother in a horrific road rage incident that took place last Sunday. The Oakland road rage incident claimed the life of a 30-year-old mother of four, identified as Perla Avina.
Writes Fox News on Oct. 30: “The suspect, identified by investigators as Carl Stephen Dubose, was nabbed in Elk Grove at about 5 p.m. Wednesday after agents surrounded a home there. Local reports said he had barricaded himself in the home before surrendering, while other accounts said he turned himself in without incident.”
Avina was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle driven by her husband, 33-year-old Luis Lopez Gallegos, when she was shot multiple times by a motorist who pulled up alongside the pair. Bay area police had offered a $30,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Avina was the passenger in a Toyota Camry, driven by Gallegos in the city’s Brookfield Village neighborhood, when another motorist sprayed bullets through the passenger side of the vehicle, killing her.
Police say Avina and her husband were driving on International Boulevard, just a few blocks from their East Oakland home, when the other motorist, disliking something about the way Gallegos was driving, fired multiple times into their car with a semi-automatic weapon before speeding off. Avina and Gallegos were returning from a supermarket, where they had bought ingredients for a traditional Mexican recipe to prepare for the Oakland Raiders game later that day.
Describing his wife’s killer, the 33-year-old Gallegos said: “He was a coward with a gun. A young guy with a gun who doesn’t care about life.”
“What we can share with you now is that the suspect was identified in a residential area and with the assistance of the Elk Grove SWAT team,” said Oakland Police Department spokeswoman Johnna Watson. “They did surround the house and were able to have the suspect come out and surrender.”
A GoFundMe account has been set up for Gallegos and his four children – one, four and eight-year-old girls and a 14-year-old boy. “Please help us fund the funeral services for Perla Evelyn Aviña Anaya Lopez, a Loving wife, daughter, and, mother of four, who’s life tragically ended when she was struck by gunfire on a random act of road rage on October 26, 2014,” the site says. To date, over $37K had been raised.
Neighbor Dwayne Jackson, across the street, said he saw Gallegos pull into his driveway and ran over to help. “We pulled her out of the car and I started giving her CPR, but I pretty much knew she was gone,” Jackson said.
“She doesn’t understand,” Gallegos said of his second youngest daughter. “She keeps asking when Mommy is coming home. It still hasn’t processed.”
