Trailing 3-0 after the first quarter, the Houston Texans scored 27 unanswered points in route to a 30-16 win over the Tennessee Titans at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday, October 26, 2014.
The Titans got on the scoreboard first at the 10:23 mark in the first quarter. After an eight play drive, the Texans punted to Tennessee and they returned the punt 48 yards to the Texan 21 yard line. After three plays, they were unable get the ball into the end zone, so they opted for the field goal. Ryan Succop split the uprights from 35 yards out for the three points and the early lead.
However, after the field goal, the game belonged to the Texans. Houston was able to put 13 points on the board in the second quarter to take a 13-3 lead into the locker room at the half. Kicker Randy Bullock accounted for seven of the points. The Texas A&M graduate nailed field goals from 30 and 29 yards and added the extra point after the Arian Foster touchdown.
Foster, on the second play of the drive, rushed up the middle for 34 yards, and the quick six points at the 6:12 mark on the second quarter. He had 20 total carries for the day, for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Foster also scored Houston’s second and third touchdowns of the game at the 12:35 and 5:42 marks in the third quarter. Bullock’s extra point attempts were good in both cases.
After the 27 unanswered points by the Texans, the Titans finally found the end zone with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger hit Delanie Walker from six yards out for the touchdown. Tennessee attempted the two point conversion, but the attempt failed due to the sting Texan defense.
Houston’s final scoring drive began with 2:12 left in the third quarter concluded with a 49 yard field goal by Bullock. The score came 38 seconds into the fourth quarter to close out the Texans’ scoring for the day. The final scoring drive lasted three minutes and covered 49 yards in eight plays.
Mettenberger was able to add another six point for the Titans with 56 seconds remaining in the game. He connected with Justin Hunter on a 12 yard pass for the score. Succop added the extra point to close out the game.
Offensively, Texan quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 19 of 35 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown. DeAndre Hopkins caught five passes for 95 yards with Andre Johnson tallied seven carries for 55 yards.
Defensively, Mike Mohamed accounted for 10 tackles with Joseph Johnson adding five. J.J. Watt had two sacks to lead the Texans.
With the win, Houston raises their season record to 4-4. They will next face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, November 2, with a 12 noon CT start at NRG Stadium in Houston.
