Texas Southern University kicks off its 68th season of college football on Sunday, August 31, 2014 against Prairie View A&M in the 30th Labor Day Classic at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The Tigers are coming off a 2-9 season and are looking to improve on their fourth place finish in the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Western Division in 2013.
At the conference’s annual Football Media Day held on July 18, 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama, TSU was picked to again finish in fourth place in the SWAC Western Division.
With that being said, third year head coach Darrell Asberry thinks the Tigers will be much improved in 2014.
Quoted in a press release from TSU, Asberry stated:
“We’re excited and ready to get going, We were able to enjoy a long productive off season and now it’s time for us to start preparing for the upcoming season. We feel really good about the team we’re going to put out on the field this year.”
The Tigers has four players named to the 2014 All-SWAC Pre-Season Football Team including junior defensive lineman Amir Bloom, who played his high school ball at Northwestern High School in Miami, Florida.
He was joined on the first team by senior defensive back Brandon Thomas from Houston Texas and junior punter Cory Carter from Raymond, Mississippi.
Senior defensive back Tray Walker (Miami, Florida) was named to the second team.
TSU will be led junior redshirt quarterback Homer Causey and graduate student wide receiver Fred Plummer, along with senior running back Daveon Porter.
The Tigers will play six home games at BBVA Compass Stadium against Texas College on September 4, Alabama A&M on September 20, Mississippi Valley State on October 4, Arkansas-Pine Bluff on October 25, Grambling State on November 1 and Jackson State on November 11.
They will play four games on the road against Central State-Ohio in Nassau, Bahamas on September 13, Alabama State in Montgomery, Alabama on September 27, Alcorn State in Loman, Mississippi on October 18 and Southern in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on November 15.
