The 2014 International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (or ICAST) took place on July 15-18, 2014 in Orlando, Florida. One of the events at the convention is the New Products Showcase sponsored by Fishing Tackle Retailer magazine.
This event features new angling gear being introduced to the market in a number of categories. Several of the category winners, including the Best of Show, have saltwater applications.
Here’s a look at those winners.
Best of Show
The Best of Show award went to Johnson Outdoors Watercraft for their Old Town Predator XL kayaks. The new boats feature a Modular Console System designed for electonices, storage and use of a power system. The Minn-Kota battery-powered unit can be easily fitted to provide all-day, hands-free navigation for trolling or structure fishing.
The suggested retail price is $2699.00 with the Minn-Kota unit.
Best Saltwater Reel
Winner of the Best Saltwater Reel category was the Penn Battle II spinning reel. The reels feature five sealed bearings and one anti-reverse bearing for more corrosion resistance. There are line capacity rings on the spool to let you know how much line you have to work with, too.
Keyed carbon ring washers in the HT-100 drag system increase the maximum drag by as much as 50 percent. The reels feature full metal bodies, side plates and rotors, with heavy-duty aluminum bail wire.
The suggested retail price is $99.95 to $129.95.
Best Saltwater Rod
The Best Saltwater Rod award went to Shimano for the Terez Stand Up model. An advanced lightweight carbon butt design lessens the weight of the rod by almost 50 percent. Coupled with the TC4 blank the entire rod eliminates more than two pounds compared with other such boat rods.
The suggest retail price range is $649.99 to $669.99.
Best Soft Lure
The Savage Gear USA’s new 3D PVC Crab took top honors for all salt and freshwater soft lures introduced at the showcase.
The bait was designed using 3D imaging to create the ultimate life-like appearance and action to draw fish even from a distance. It is available in a variety of popular colors and in two sizes designed for saltwater angling.
The suggested retail price is $3.49 to $4.49 per pack.
Best Tackle Management
Engel USA was the winner in the Best Tackle Managment category for their UC30-RH combination cooler and dry box with rod holders. The 19- to 30-quart cooler and dry box has a durable UV-resistant outer shell, along with a watertight EVA-foam gasket. On the outside are four attached rod holders.
The suggested retail price is $84.99.
