If you are interested in knowing more about Ohio’s past and you enjoy family-friendly, hands-on, educational activities then make sure to make a stop at the free Cleveland Metroparks’ annual Cedar Valley Settlers Celebration on Sunday, September 14 at the Rocky River Reservation in the Cleveland western suburb of North Olmsted.
Cedar Valley Settlers Celebration Taking place at the Frostville Museum and the adjacent Apple Field, visitors to the Festival will be able to experience activities from Ohio’s frontier days including pioneer crafts and life skills. More than 8000 people are expected to attend.
Among some of the activities available for visitors will be candle making, rug braiding, stenciling, rope making, storytelling and kids will get the opportunity to make a toy. All activities will be overseen by pioneer-costumed folks. There will also be performances by a colonial magician and don’t miss the chance to tour a frontier encampment.
Demonstrations include apple butter making and cooking over an open fire. Visitors will be able to sample traditional foods like biscuits with freshly churned butter, apple cider, apple butter and stews.
And be sure to participate in the contra dancing lessons being given from the group Mud in Yer Eye.
There will be free live musical entertainment throughout the day. Appearing on the Main Stage at the Frostville Museum from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. will be singer Dale Ann Bradley who was named “Female Vocalist of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Other performers include Mike Gorrell (at 11:30 a.m.) and Border Ride (at 1 p.m.).
Visitors will also be able to tour all the historic buildings that make up the village at Frostville Museum.
It is suggested that you bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the performance at the Main Stage.
Hours for the Cedar Valley Settlers Celebration are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.. Admission is free. parking is available at the Rocky River Nature Center and the Lagoon Picnic Area. Premier parking is available at the Little Cedar Point parking area for $2 per car. Free shuttles will be provided.
