Dennis DeYoung may be best known as a founding member of STYX and from his tenure as lead singer and writer on seven of the bands eight Top Ten Hits. But, with consecutive triple-platinum albums and millions of record sales to his credit, DeYoung’s voice, songs and keyboard playing have made him one of the most recognizable figures in music. With a voice as full and effervescent as ever, the master musician and prolific songwriter brings his live concert complete with a six-piece band to the Keswick Theatre reliving all the classic hits in one unforgettable evening on Thursday, July 17 at 8 PM.
The Chicago-area native, started his career as a vocalist in 1961 at the age of 14 when he teamed up with his 13-year-old neighbors Chuck and John Panozzo in a three-piece combo. The trio later added guitarist James Young and John Curulewski to form the band that would become known around the world as STYX when their DeYoung-penned hit, “Lady” propelled them to international success.
A self-taught keyboardist, DeYoung quickly became one of the most notable players of that instrument in rock. From sweeping ballads, epic scores and sonic landscapes to some of the most iconic arena rock songs of all-time, Dennis DeYoung beloved signature grandiose sound is the constant high-point that this evening revolves around. The scope of talent is undeniable as you hear all of the STYX greatest hits spanning the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s including “Lady”, “Come Sail Away”, “Too Much Time on My Hands”, “Best of Times”, plus Classic Rock anthems “Renegade”, “Blue Collar Man”, “Suite Madam Blue”, ”Rockin The Paradise”. Fans also get the opportunity to hear the songs STYX no longer performs like “Babe” and “Mr. Roboto”.
With STYX in limbo following Shaw’s 1984 departure, DeYoung began a successful solo career, releasing albums, composing a musical based on Vincent Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, touring with Jesus Christ Superstar as Pontius Pilate, performing the music of STYX with a 50-piece orchestra, producing songs for movie soundtracks and even appearing in a major motion picture as a lead singer in a Styx tribute band.
DeYoung’s new touring six piece band has performance credits that read like a who’s who of popular music. August Zadra and Jimmy Leahey share lead guitar and vocal duties, John Blascucci provides layers of sound on keyboards, Craig Carter plays tight on bass, Tom Sharpe bridges the gap between timeless rhythms and a modern sound on drums and Suzanne DeYoung still sings her heart out as backing vocalist.
