Despite the loss, the Oakland Raiders put up a fight against the New England Patriots. The defense did a way better job than the offense by keeping the Patriots from blowing out the Raiders, which was the expected outcome of this game.
The offense for the Raiders lacked a lot power and basically looked very bland throughout the game. No one stepped it up and made things happen. The Raiders basically looked like they lacked talent offensively.
Again, the Raiders’ defense did not do too bad. The Patriots were favored by at least 14 points and only won by seven, a touchdown. Many analysts were expecting a blow out since the Patriots were playing at home and the Raiders’ looked bad in week 2 in Oakland against the Texans.
The Silver and Black defense got two sacks and kept the Patriots with a third down efficiency of 50 percent. The defense also kept Tom Brady with only getting one touchdown. It’s not bad considering that Brady was playing at home.
The defense also did a great job at stopping the run against the Patriots. New England got a total of 76 yards. Linebacker Khalil Mack was very effective at helping with stopping run, as the player had told the press earlier in the week that the Raiders needed to concentrate on stopping the run.
Another good thing in this game for the Oakland Raiders was Sebastian Janikowski’s performance. The future Hall of Famer kicker kept the Raiders alive against the New England Patriots. The Polish Cannon was three-for-three including a 49 yard kick, scoring the only points the Raiders made on Sunday, nine points.
The Raiders’ offense not being able to score, besides the kicker, was the bad. The running game was pretty much shut down as Darren McFadden was the only one running, getting 54 yards total. Marcel Reece and Latavius Murray could have been used more but the coaching staff decided not to go that rout.
The receiving was just bad as well. When it mattered, the receiving unit kept flopping the ball, especially Denarius Moore at the end of the game, letting the ball bounce of his hands in the red zone and turning the play into a turnover as the Patriots corners caught the ball.
There was only 174 yards in receiving, and, to beat the Patriots, more receiving yards has to be accomplished. Derek Carr who is doing OK for a rookie, did not get a touchdown. It would have been nice to see the kid get a touchdown pass on Sunday.
One last bad thing that occurred in the game against the Patriots was the last penalty call on the Silver and Black for holding that annulled Darren McFadden’s touchdown. The score would have tied the game, if Janikowski would have made the extra point, but c’mon!
The hold was considered controversial as it did not really look like a hold! Again, the Oakland Raiders lose a game to the New England Patriots due to a controversial call.
To conclude, the Silver and Black played a lot better than what most expected, despite the low scoring. The defense stepped up, but the offense still looks too bland and weak. The offense needs to make things happen for the next game by using the running game more than what was done against the Patriots.
