Wouldn’t it be wonderful, if we all could change our personalities or just our disposition the way we change a mask on Halloween. Unfortunately for those who suffer from depression, this is not possible. Although a person may wear the mask of a happy person or a person who has it altogether, people who suffer from depression know better than anyone else that they do not – have it altogether that is.As a matter of fact, those that experience feelings of anxiety and despair often enter what feels like a dark tunnel unaware of when or if they might come out on the other end. It often can seem that others are experiencing life differently and that they are being judged for that very reason. But not everyone is happy or content no more than not everyone is sad or have sad feelings. I think it is even worse in this age of social networking. Everyone seems to be having a great life, when really they are just putting there best face forward – a face that may not even be their own. These people who may internalize their feelings want nothing less than to be judged by someone on a social network never mind in real life. They have probably become accustomed to being told to “just to shake it off” or people telling them how much worst off they could be. Although the sufferer may know this, their emotions do not respond to that knowledge because they could be experiencing a chemical imbalance etc. Trust me if they could change how they feel everyday on a daily basis they would. The day to day struggles to get through the day to day are not just an excuse invented to give “you” a hard time. These are true genuine feelings not concocted to give you – the spectator a hard time.
One would think that in this day and age of internet knowledge that people or society would be aware of the chemical changes that can make up such changes in a person that is suffering from depression. Instead it seems much easier for many just to pretend that such feelings do not exist. I cannot imagine how hard this would be to be experiencing such feelings, if you are a person in a prominent position such as a celebrity. For example, it could be explained as shocking when celebrities such as Robin Williams go on to take their own lives. It leads the public to answer why? Such people seem to have it all. But really everyone – even celebrities are human and share the same feelings as those of us that are just trying to get through the day to day – they are no different than you are I. Even worse they are bombarded by more people who scrutinize and judge them.
So why do people do such things? What would make someone unable to enter into that tunnel unable to come out on the other side? Well we are all individuals and some days may just be worse than others or for some one day may be better or easier to not only think about such things but to act on them (as well). Perhaps this is what occurred in Robin Williams’s case. I do not know http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2014/08/11/robin-williams-bipolar-sufferer-dead-at-63-due-to-suicide/. All I know is that he was depressed – had suffered from depression for a long time. Whereas addiction was a contributing factor, depression seems to have been the cause and now he is no longer physically with us but is destined to live on inside our memories and inside our hearts forever. Perhaps those that laugh the loudest experience the most laughter and the most pain – equally. If he were here – if Robin were here I would just listen if he chose to talk or I would just be a hand to touch, a hug, a kiss, an ear to lend. …..Isn’t that what we all really need – a person just to listen. This is called validation and although not many will post that realization on their Facebook pages, they scream it out through every post saying, “please accept me in spite of all of my frailties and imperfections”. Society – To those that are suffering from depression, what will your answer be?
