Dressing up a Dachshund is always challenging, but once they’re in the costume, the precocious dogs will strut their stuff. The breed is a little tough to clothe, but some of them really like to dress up. Others will try to rip their costumes off.
What’s original for a wiener dog? That’s tough. There’s all the usual jokes that you can think of involving frankfruter, wiener or any of the dog names that come with the breed (see this story).
Here is a list of obvious costumes, and some funny photos of them. Enjoy, and let us know what you can dress your dog in! Write it in the comments below!
Hot diggity dog
Yeah, well, your Dachshund was named after a hot dog (yes, the sausage came first), and of course they look like those long edible confections, but it’s not always that original. Of course, it’s how the hot dog costume looks. There are good and bad costumes, but it’s easy and cute.
What’s up Dachs?
The Dachshund Doctor is simple and cute, and the costume can always be a wiener. It’s simple to do, except if your dog can’t carry around a stethoscope.
Dachshund vampires are scary, and sometimes they don’t even need fake teeth. A cape is good, we’ve seen them even inside little coffins. Count Dach-sula is the perfect name. For the girls, Vampa-weenie?
It may look like your little hot dog got swallowed up by a reptile, but he/she is long and a crocodile or an alligator may look best on your weenie. There’s also dog dinosaur costumes, too.
The breed is from Germany, they are German, and so an Octoberfest reference is certainly appropriate. Just give your dog a cap and sash, but don’t even think about trying the leather-hosen.
Dream of weenie
Even Barbara Eden, the original TV “Jeannie” loved this depiction of a Dachshund in a genie costume. Of course, you can always use the pun, but even out of the costume, we know you dream of Dachsies.
Stuffing a Dachshund inside a banana is more than a dream delicacy, it’s a pretty cute costume, too. Of course, your dog may want to peel it off quickly, but a banana is a funny idea for something as streamlined as a Doxie.
Another German theme (or Swiss), your Dachshund could be dressed up as a yodeler or a cute little Swiss girl. No, the Dachshund isn’t really a mountain dog, but he’ll be cute in a long Pipi Longstocking wig. And, some dogs can yodel.
A little devil
Dachshund owners know that they all can be little devils, so the costume may not be far from the truth. Find some horns and lots of red (unless you already have a red Doxie), and of course, the tail is there already. This is perhaps the truest costume you can find for a Dachshund!
