In the upright position, the death card of tarot suggests that it is time to move on. A chapter of our life has come to its inevitable and logical conclusion and it is time to put it aside and commence with the next chapter. This is personal evolution and it is to be embraced and appreciated. Just as a butterfly flies from the cocoon once it has transformed, so too must we from time periods and situations of life. A lizard does not shed its skin only to cling to it. A lizard sheds its skin and moves on. So must we.
In the reversed position, the death card suggests that we are resisting the inevitable. We do not allow ourselves to move on. This is a product of our mind. We hold onto old ideas and regrets that are preventing growth and change. Instead of moving on to the next chapter of your life, we keep replaying and reliving the old things. Maybe we stay stuck. We feel impulses to move and make changes, but ignore them. We are of a mindset that you must stay as is. We don’t allow ourselves the full growth we could be.
Perhaps it is a pleasant memory that we cling to, wanting to hold onto it for the warmth it provides. But this is a memory. It is in our mind. It exists in no other place. What is behind us is behind us no matter how warm it is. Maybe all logic suggests that we sell the house we live in. There are so many practical reasons to do so that it is obvious. But there are memories in that house. This is where we raised our children. This is where that old dog used to live with us. But all that is in the past. Let it go. Put it in your memory bank and move on. This is not a valid reason to hold onto the house. We are letting the past dictate our present which is going to impact our future. Do the right thing here. Do what you know you need to do. Sell the house and move on with life.
Sometimes we hold onto a regret. This regret becomes a block keeping us from getting to where we need to go. Maybe you keep playing over an incident that you find unfortunate over and over in your head, as if you may achieve a different result from it if you examine it over and over enough. But this of course will not happen. Don’t let this incident slow you down. Jump over it as a hurdle and let life happen. Let new chapters begin.
When the death card comes up for you in the reversed position, examine what you are holding onto that is keeping you from moving forward into the next chapter of life. Be brave about it. Let it go. You will never evolve if you stay stuck in the past. Be good to yourself and be willing and able to let go.
