Taylor Swift joined “The Voice” tonight, Oct. 27, to help mentor the contestants for the Knockout Round. Instead of acting as a mentor for one team in particular, Taylor helped all the contestants, regardless of the team they were on.
First up was a pairing from Team Gwen: Bryana Salaz, with Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack,” and Sugar Jones, with Beyonce’s “Love On Top.” Adam said he was sorry for Gwen for having to make the decision. Blake didn’t think it was normal for someone Bryana’s age to sound like that. Pharrell told Bryana to do what she felt was right and told Sugar he would press his button for her so fast. Gwen had first felt disappointed in Sugar’s song choice, but she did so well during her performance. She was happy with Bryana listening to Taylor’s advice.
Gwen chose Bryana as the winner. Before Sugar could get a word in, Pharrell had pressed his button to steal her. He said he was blown away by her affinity for soul music.
Team Blake’s James David Carter sang “You’ve Got a Friend,” while Griffin went with “As Long As You Love Me.” Pharrell thought it would be a tough call and didn’t know what Blake would do. Gwen felt James would be the winner because Griffin seemed like he was still trying to find out who he was. Adam thought Griffin played it safe and gave it to James. Blake chose James as the winner.
Next up was Team Pharrell: DaNica Shirey sang “Saving All My Love For You,” and Katriz Trinidad sang “I Am Superwoman.” Gwen told both ladies they did an amazing job. Adam couldn’t believe Katriz could sing that well at her age, and he said DaNica had been the one to beat. Blake was impressed at how much Katriz and stepped up and by how great of a singer DaNica is. Pharrell chose DaNica as the winner.
Damien, from Team Adam, performed “How Do I Live,” while Toia Jones went with “Crazy In Love.” Blake commented on Toia’s great singing and entertainment. He told Damien he loved the song, but what Toia did was so over the top. Pharrell said it was a flawless performance and that Toia tore the place down. Gwen told Damien his voice was amazing and the song was beautiful, but she was in shock over Toia’s performance. Adam commented on the song choices before announcing Damien as the winner.
Jessie Pitts, from Team Blake, sang “Your Song,” and was up against Tanner Linford, with “Calling All Angels.” Pharrell thought what Tanner brought to the song made him look at it differently, and Jessie showed melodic topography. Gwen felt it was a great performance from Tanner, and she was very happy for Jessie. Adam was surprised at how powerful Tanner’s voice was and thought there was more to come for Jessie. Blake chose Jessie as the winner.
Team Pharrell’s Luke Wade performed “Rich Girl,” while Taylor Phelan sang “Rather Be.” Gwen thought both performances were great. Adam commented that both guys were two major losses for him in the blinds and didn’t think there was a winner, but he did think someone was going to his team. Blake said Luke did a lot of ad libbing, which left the door open for Taylor to perform the meaning of the song. Pharrell understood what Blake was saying, but he still said Luke was the winner.
Adam and Gwen both pressed their buttons to steal Taylor. Blake jumped in on the action and pressed his button also. Adam said Pharrell made a mistake, and Gwen said Taylor should pick her team because she had never made a mistake. Blake said he would work hard with Taylor up to the finale. Taylor then chose Adam to be his new coach.
