“The Walking Dead” is officially back for it’s fifth season with the new episode “No Sanctuary,” which aired last night Oct. 12 on AMC. Last season ended with multiple cliffhangers and the main cast in imminent danger at the hands of the people in charge of Terminus. Terminus was not the sanctuary it promised to be and run by possible cannibals. Rick, Daryl, Carl and the others ended up trapped inside a railroad car labeled “A,” at the end of last season, stripped of their weapons and put into what appeared to be an impossible situation to get out of.
During the first few minutes of “No Sanctuary” we see all the group members inside the railroad car making weapons out of their belongings and planning to attack their captors when they open the door. Their plan is foiled when the top of the railroad car is opened up and a canister of gas is thrown down, debilitating the group. For the moment, all hope is once again lost during the zombie apocalypse.
Rick, Daryl, Bob and Glenn and four others are herded into a processing room and a ghoulish scene involving two Terminus survivors, a power saw and a body on a gurney is seen across the room. The group is lined up and tied up in front of a trough and pushed to their knees. The end seems near for the group. The first four men at the trough are hit in the head with a baseball bat and their throats slit.
Gareth walks in right before Glenn is about to be killed and asks one of the executioners for his shot count during the round up. This gives Bob an opportunity to speak up, which Gareth gives him. Gareth also talks to Rick about the bag of weapons in the woods. Shots are heard in the distance and Gareth looks concerned. Rick takes the opportunity to get the wooden shank out of his boot that he made while in the train car. Rick attacks the executioners and takes them out.
After Rick unties Bob, Daryl and Glenn the group searches for weapons nearby and begin to formulate a plan of escape. Meanwhile Carol and Tyreese are walking the tracks towards Terminus and they encounter a large herd of walkers. Gunshots in the distance distract the herd and the walkers are drawn towards Terminus. Meanwhile Tyreese and Carol come across a shack and a member of Terminus. They tie him up and take control of the shack. Carol formulates a plan to go to Terminus and rescue her friends.
Carol creates a chaotic distraction by blowing up the natural gas container at Terminus. Walkers fly through the air and are incinerated on the ground by the explosion, and the front gate to Terminus is left wide open for the herd to enter. Carol, now masquerading as a walker, enters Terminus to finish the job she started.
Inside the “A” train car the group of Maggie, Michonne, Carl and the others try to figure out their plan of escape. Rick, Bob, Daryl and Glenn, now free inside the human processing room, are also trying to find an escape. A massive battle ensues. Carol stumbles upon a room full of personal belongings, picking up a watch and Daryl’s crossbow. Rick takes the initiative to kill off a group of Terminus gunmen which inspires the survivors that this small war with Terminus can actually be won.
Carol runs into Mary, showing her no mercy, shooting her in the leg. Mary is left for the walkers to devour as Carol exits. Tyreese, back at the shack, is faced with a tough situation when the man from Terminus he’s holding captive threatens to snap Judith’s neck. Tyreese is forced outside where he kills numerous walkers with his bare hands. Meanwhile, Eugene is questioned about the cure and what he really knows about it. A few seconds later Rick opens the door to the train car and the group is suddenly back together and fighting walkers.
The group finds a spot to jump the fence and they locate their bag of weapons in the woods. There’s a discussion of what to do next, and Rick is clear that he wants to go back and kill everyone at Terminus. Carol wanders up to the group carrying Daryl’s crossbow. The two embrace and have a moment. Rick walks up to Carol next and they embrace, Rick thanking Carol for what she just did to save the group.
Carol takes Rick and the group back to the shack, where Tyreese has killed the man from Terminus and saved Judith. Rick runs to Judith and holds her tight. Carl has a smile on his face for the first time in a long time. For the moment, all is right in the world once again. Rick has a change of heart and tells the group they need to go somewhere far away from Terminus. Rick and the group walk the tracks away from Terminus and a flashback scene shows Gareth and his mother Mary inside a train car, abused and defeated. It brings to light the history that turned Gareth and the people of Terminus into the monsters they were.
“The Walking Dead” returns next Sunday with an all new episode that hopefully sheds some light on where Beth has ended up. Last season Beth and Daryl were the surprise pairing but were separated and Beth was whisked away by a car with a cross on it after walkers invaded the house they were staying at. It was a major cliffhanger and numerous theories about Beth’s whereabouts swirled on the internet. We now know that Beth is alive and at some sort of hospital, but we don’t know much more than that. Stay tuned to find out the full story.
