It’s finally here. On September 27 Wetpaint Entertainment posted the news that the highly anticipated companion series to “The Walking Dead” has released news of its first characters. The show was first rumored during the third season of the popular AMC show, with comic book creator Robert Kirkman later confirming that the idea was in development. The new series will be a spin-off of the original, but won’t feature the same actors.
The new series will be set in the same world as the original, but focus on a different set of survivors. It looks like the new show will have six main cast members, and the real twist is that five of the six are part of a family. The series will follow two families, the Cabrera’s and the Tompkins. There will also be a sixth member who is a middle aged woman.
The Cabrera family is made up of Sean and Cody Cabrera, a father and son team who will no doubt be similar to the relationship between Rick and Carl from the original show. Sean is a Latino man in the forties who is described as “trying to do right by everyone” in life. His son, Cody, is a “rebellious” teenager who is known for his anger.
The Tompkins family is made up of Nancy, Nick and Ashley. Nancy is a single mother of two children, who has “an edge to her.” Nick is her indecisive teenage son, who is a freeloader that is too “scared” to leave his family. Ashley is the ambitious younger sister, who makes up for her brother’s shortcomings but wants to leave home.
On September 27 TVLine confirmed that the final sixth cast member will be named Andrea, which may be a nod to the character from the original series who perished in season three. Her full name is Andrea Chapman, and she leaves the city in order to recover from her failed marriage. The new season will focus on an unseen part of the walker outbreak, and there are rumors it will actually be a prequel series.
The first season of “The Walking Dead” saw the survivors head to Atlanta, where the headquarters for the CDC (Center for Disease Control) is located. Months has gone by since the outbreak and with it’s fifth season about to start, several years have passed on the show. The new series may focus on the initial days after the outbreak and the effort to keep the epidemic from spreading.
One of the story lines for the new season will be having the survivors head towards Washington D.C., in order to find a cure for the outbreak. However, the executive producers have mentioned that the cause of the outbreak may never be revealed, even though a cure is explored in the comic book series. The new series is currently casting and has no official title, so a production date is still a ways off.
