Clevelanders who would like to know what kind of upcoming winter Northeast Ohio is going to have could possibly get the answer at the 42nd annual Woollybear Festival being held in Vermilion, Ohio on Sunday, September 28. It is approximately a 45 minute drive from Cleveland.
Woollybear Festival First established in 1973 by longtime Northeast Ohio meteorologist Dick Goddard (WJW-TV Fox 8), the Woollybear Festival celebrates the Woolly Bear caterpillar and its mystical association with predicting the weather by the width of the black band on its body. It is said that if the band on the caterpillar’s brown back is wide then the area is in for a harsh winter with lots of snow. A smaller band means that a mild winter is on its way.
The largest one-day festival in the state of Ohio, the Woollybear Festival will take place at two venues in Vermilion — Victory Park on S. Main St. and Exchange Park at the corner of N. Main St., and Liberty Ave.
One of the main events of the Festival is the Woollybear Parade being held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday and lasting approximately 2 hours. Dick Goddard and other radio and TV personalities will be there in addition to over 15 marching bands with over 2000 musicians, Woollybear kids and pets riding a hay wagon, vintage automobiles, clowns, floats, Festival queens and animals.
Other activities include the World’s Greatest Kids Race (a series of races for children 1-12), animal/pet woollybear costume contests and arts & crafts. Live musical entertainment will be provided by various performers on the Main Stage during the Festival.
Visitors will be able to take a ride on the Mystic Belle, a small paddlewheeler which will be offering rides up and down the Vermilion River.
A highlight of the Festival will be the official Woollybear weather prediction for winter taking place on the main stage at 5 p.m.
Plenty of food booths will be on hand. Woollybear souvenirs and merchandise will be available for purchase at the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce stand.
Hours for the Woollybear Festival are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.. Admission is free.
