Every year there are magical moments in Newark, New Jersey as each cherry blossom blooms in Branch Brook Park during the spring. Since crowds come each year to see the cherry blossoms, it is a park that is well maintained. In the past, other parks such as Washington Park and Military Park were neglected. Today Washington Park and Military Park are well kept as green grass and trees are now on the grounds. Planting trees in open green spaces improves the quality of life for all Newarkers.
Nature is a precious gift that we enjoy during our lifetime. How relaxing it is to walk on the sand and watch the waves. How invigorating it is to breathe the air at the shore. How soothing it is to hear the seagulls. How wonderful the shade from a tree is to escape the heat on a warm summer day. Each of us enjoys a different facet of nature. Sadly, nature is in jeopardy as global warming is changing our planet’s climate. Due to climate change, we will be having more earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes – – just to name a few examples.
At the Climate Summit 2014 in the United Nations, world leaders and influential people gathered together to find ways to combat global warming and try to salvage our ailing planet. One way to help our environment and help to heal our world is to plant more trees. We must also make an effort to preserve the open green spaces that remain in our planet. One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.
In big cities like Newark, New Jersey, we need to plant more trees to fight off the effects of air pollution and improve air quality. It is great news that more trees were planted at Washington Park and Military Park, but we still need to plant more trees at other locations not just at the parks.
Planting trees is not only good for our environment; trees beautify our towns and cities. Trees provide homes for wildlife and safe places where children can play. Trees inspire people as there are many books and movies about trees. Trees can also serve as markers to help us remember moments of our lives.
As trees were planted at Military Park, there was a tree that was cut down. It was known as the Historic Plane tree and was at Military Park before the Revolutionary War. It was the oldest standing tree in Newark. At the site, there is a plaque where we can read about the Historic Plane tree. Every single day trees are cut down, for every single tree that is cut down we should plant many more.
