Think Progress thought it was getting a sensational story that would ruin Michele Bachmann’s life after her political career. Instead, they bit on a hoax:
Think Progress, a website operated by the liberal Center for American Progress, failed to vet a phony story which claimed that Minnesota U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann proposed “Americanization” labor camps for Central American unaccompanied children.
“I’m calling on all of us, Obama and Congress and everyone, to chip in and build special new facilities… ‘Americanization facilities,’ if you will,” Bachmann said, according to Think Progress, which has since corrected its embarrassing flub.
“And we’d send these kids to these facilities, in Arizona and Texas and wherever else. And we’d get private sector business leaders to locate to those facilities and give these children low-risk jobs to do. And they’d learn about the American way of life, earn their keep, and everyone wins in the end,” Bachmann continued, in Think Progress’ fantasy land.
Here’s how they bit on the hoax:
Think Progress was snookered by a post at a website called KCTV 7, which presents itself as a news outlet based in Kansas City. A quick internet search reveals a number of online posts pointing out that KCTV 7 is a fake news site. It also shows no affiliation to major news networks. According to TV guide listings for the Kansas City area, channel 7 is not in use.
Think Progress bought the hoax because they don’t truly understand Michele Bachmann. It isn’t that she hasn’t said any controversial things. She definitely has. It’s that they don’t understand Rep. Bachmann’s priorities.
For instance, during an interview with Chris Matthews in 2008, she made this controversial statement:
Appearing on MSNBC’s Hardball today, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) attacked the patriotism of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), based on his alleged relationship to former Weather Underground member William Ayers and the values of Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. “I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views,” said Bachmann. “That’s what the American people are concerned about.”
She then went further, suggesting that all liberal views, held by people such as Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, professors, and all Americans who identify themselves as “liberals”, are “anti-American.” When host Chris Matthews, stunned by her remarks, asked Bachmann how many people in Congress hold anti-American views, she responded, “You’ll have to ask them.”
That statement was ridiculed then but Michele Bachmann was right. President Obama has gotten slapped down by the Supreme Court 13 straight times for doing things that the executive branch isn’t authorized to do. It isn’t just that he’s gotten shot down that many times. It’s that those rulings have been unanimous rulings. That fits the description of being anti-American.
The dirty little truth is that Think Progress and President Obama are the radicals who should be ridiculed.
