This week we see another power packed week of music rolling into the Atlanta area. Local, regional and national acts are setting up shop all over town for your listening pleasures. Here are a few highlights of some you may want to check out.
Crane @ Eddie’s Attic (Album release party)
Tuesday, September 9th
If you have never listened to Anthony Crane’s music then you need to. Giving soul, blues and rock a Southern infusion the Atlanta musician dishes out tunes that are easy to get into. He has never met a venue he didn’t like and will play his soulful music wherever and whenever people want to listen. This Tuesday night at Eddie’s Attic will be the album release party for his latest album (a review coming later)as he takes the stage jamming tunes like “I Love Women”, “Come Back”, “Nasty Pill” and “Party People”. Joining him for the night in music is his sometimes partner in crime Jacob Blazer and the Good People so be sure you get there early and catch all the killer music. Not a bad line-up for a Tuesday night and you get to support local music.
Mike Snowden @ The Atlanta Arts Festival (Piedmont Park)
Saturday, September 13th (at Noon)
Seeing Mike Snowden live is an experience you need to have. Raw bluesy rock from the one man band himself is what you get as he treats listeners to a collection of originals and re-imagined covers. Snowden’s own “Mr. Evil”, “Georgia Mountain Train” and “Chicken Coop Blues” will make you an instant fan and his version of song like “Blitzkrieg Bop” or “Ice Cream Man” are just icing on the cake. Come check out Mr. Snowden and treat your ears to some great music and if you get hooked you can even buy one of his handcrafted guitars.
International Pop Overthrow @ Star Bar & Red Light Cafe
Friday September 12th, Saturday September 13th & Sunday September 14th
For 16 years the International Pop Overthrow music fest has been taking place in cities all over the world bringing some mighty fine music for people to indulge in. This weekend the IOP finds itself at the friendly confines of our own resident dive bar the Star Bar before heading to the Red Light Café for Sunday’s finale. For three days come treat yourself to a plethora of bands, some you have heard of, some you may not have, but all offering up some damn fine tunes. Friday night be sure not to miss the raw rock sounds of The Dirty Souls (this guys kick ass live), Saturday local new wave pop band The Shut Ups are a can’t miss and Sunday Orange Hat delivers jangly guitar riffs on the last day of the fest. With many more bands playing you need to get there early and check them all out, this will be a good weekend of tunes.
Diarrhea Planet @ The Masquerade
Saturday, September 13th
Don’t let the name scare you off, these guys know how to kick ass on stage. Pounding rhythms fuzz infused guitars and voracious vocals attack your auditory senses drawing you into the noisy world of the Athens, GA band. Their set will be loud and raw as they tear through songs from their album I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams as well as a few other choice treats. Bring your ear plugs because it is going to get ear rattling loud at the Masquerade, but in a good way.
Yacht Rock Revue @ Park Tavern
Friday, Sept 12th
Atlanta’s finest purveyors of smooooth (yes I needed that many O’s) will be jamming the best of the 70’s/80’s mellow rock at their home away from home, the Park Tavern. These guys have perfected their sound as they roll through tunes by the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Toto and many others. They immerse themselves into the music they love giving performances that are just about as good as the originals. Don’t expect some cheese ball hokey cover band they go all in and a good night will be had by all.
So there you go, five musical acts performing here in Atlanta this week that are well worth your time and money. Go out show them some support and enjoy some mighty fine music.
