Although fans have come to accept Emmy winner Tony Geary (Luke) taking a yearly break from ‘General Hospital,’ this time things are different.
Geary is combining his usual extended vacation with his recovery from two major back surgeries. So, Geary will be absent from the soap for a total of six months.
‘…It’s been a challenging year. I knew for a while that I had to have this surgery but I love my story on GH and didn’t want to walk away from it, so I delayed the operation a bit. I had two operations, actually — one on April 21 and another April 23 — thinking that after two weeks I’d be able to fly home to Amsterdam. As it turned out, it took me two weeks before I was even walking. I decided to take six months off the show because I was told it would be an arduous recovery. I need to walk two to three miles a day to get my strength back and regenerate the nerves damaged during the operation. But the surgery was a success and I’m a fast healer. I have only myself to blame. My chickens finally came home to roost,’ the actor told TV Guide journalist Michael Logan in a recent interview.
Geary admitted to being somewhat of a daredevil in his early life saying he thought he ‘could fly’ as a child and subsequently ‘was always jumping off the top of the house.’
Geary was an athlete in school (high jump and pole vault, of course) and he later went on to work ‘as a cliff diver in Acapulco.’
Recently Geary learned he had suffered major spine damage so the time came to go under the knife, so to speak.
So what does all of this mean for the man fans of Tony Geary? Unfortunately, the true Luke/Fluke reveal will be put on hold until Geary’s return in the fall.
But it will be worth the wait. Fans are truly enjoying this crazy twist with the beloved character. Especially now that we know this man isn’t really our Luke.
Geary has clearly taken the ball and run with it as far as his character is concerned lately. And it seems he’s enjoying the ride.
‘…Doing Fluke has been a real cleansing after all my years of complaining and wondering what happened to Luke’s black hat. To be able to take something this far and this dark has been a real joy after 36 years. Of course, we had to do it with a different character, since Luke is not a sociopath,’ he told Logan.
Geary said that due to the direction of his character, he had decided to leave the show about a year ago. Then everything changed when Geary had a change of heart and went to Executive producer Frank Valentini, saying he had more to give.
‘… I’d like a story when Luke is proactive rather than reactive. I want him to cause problems for people, rather than helping them solve problems. I want to see a side of Luke we’ve never seen,’ Geary told Valentini (via Michael Logan).
And the story of ‘Fluke’ was born via Head Writer Ron Carlivati.
‘… This storyline has revived my whole interest in the game,’ Geary continued.
And that’s an understatement! Geary is more fun and exciting to watch then he’s been in years. Many feel this is his best work since the rape story way back in the early days of ‘Luke and Laura.’
