“True Blood” star Joe Manganiello recently revealed that he struggled with alcohol before deciding to clean up his act. Now his co-star Chris Bauer is joining him by admitting that he battled both drugs and alcohol before he was ready to admit he had a problem, reported People magazine on Sunday.
Chris now says that he suffered for years before he finally accepted help from 12-step meetings and friends. “It had to get so bad that my willingness to change and allow others to help me change had to override my obsession with drugs and alcohol,” he reflects.
By facing his addictions, Chris turned his life around and focused on healthy pursuits. Working out regularly with trainer Bobby Strom, Chris lost 40 pounds.
The trainer who helped Chris also guided Jessica Biel through the moves needed to sculpt her body for the film “Blade: Trinity.” Bobby notes on his Web site that his goal for her was to give her a body that looked like “a vampire-slaying, comic-book character sprung to life.”
For Chris, the difference in strength is dramatic. “I can bench press more at 47 years old than I could playing football my senior year in high school!” he boasted. In addition, his blood pressure and cholesterol levels have improved.
But it’s been a long and winding road to sobriety. And although he got sober after he shot the pilot for “True Blood,” it is only now, as the popular show films its seventh and final season, that Chris feels able to talk about it, reported the Daily Mail on Sunday.
“I got sober right after I shot the pilot for ‘True Blood.’ Now that it’s winding down, I’m in touch with how much my life has changed from getting my act together,” reflected Chris.
Just how bad did it get? “It was a slow motion catastrophe. I wasn’t just out of control, I was 100 percent off my path,” he said.
The similarity of his story and co-star Manganiello’s confessions is striking. Both battled their demons and tried to hide them despite the inevitable spotlight of the entertainment world. And both cleaned up their diets and shed weight once they became sober.
For Joe, an obsession with exercising and eating right became a healthy replacement. He’s even authored a book about it “Evolution: The Cutting Edge Guide to Breaking Down Mental Walls and Building the Body You’ve Always Wanted.”
It’s a high protein, low carb diet that fuels his twice-a-day workouts. Joe eats Paleo-style meals and snacks, such as buffalo jerky.
Joe’s dedication to diet helps when he has to change his body for a role, he told Entertainment Weekly recently. In “Sabotage,” for example, he gained weight. Using his exercise experience, however, he was able to shed it easily for his “True Blood” persona.
