Sunrise and Bandai released Gundam Build Fighters last year: a show focusing on Gunpla being used in a Gunpla Battles, featuring Build Strike Gundam with pilots Sei Iori and Reiji. With the crew was a great cast and, thanks for it being subbed and shown in North America, it was a hit. Now, a year later, a new season starts in Gundam Build Fighters Try.
Starting off, the show does take place 7 years after the events of the original season. We got three new main characters that step up with very distinct personalities: Fumina, Gunpla Battle President who owns the GM Cardigan (and later revealed to one day wield the SD Gundam called Winning Gundam), Yuuma Kousaka, a genius, artistic Gunpla builder and brother to Sei’s girlfriend, China from the original show; and finally, the very rambunctious, Reiji looking character, Seiki.
The first two episodes of the show great with set up. We learned a lot about our main three characters quickly. We get a good idea of the characters personality right away. Fumina loves Gunpla, Gunpla Battles and is very passionate. She’s definitely not a weak female character. She is smart and a capable leader. Yuuma is very intelligent, passive and loves Gunpla yet deals with insecurities from his past. Seiki is very passionate, hot-blooded, yet perspective and loves to fight. Seiki really shines in these episode, most likely the person they want us to take as the main character out of the three.
We get good supporting characters as Ral is back as coach for the team. The president of the Plastic Model club, Miyuga, seems to be a good foil. Yet, the one supporting character that will turn heads has got to be Sekai’s older sister, Mirai. Mirai is mature and very perceptive herself. The pacing of the first two episodes are near perfect. There are some great opening battles, good character interplay and the mecha designs are beautiful. The opening to the show gives us many mecha that are not Gundam and just holds your interest. The three main mecha for the show are definitely great picks as we see Lightning Gundam, which is a modified Zeta Gundam (considered by many as the greatest Gundam series ever), the GM Cardigan (which throwsback to various UC Gundam series) and Build Burning Gundam, which is a shout out to the first alternate universe Gundam, G Gundam, and a perfect fit for Seiki and his martial arts.
The art for the show is top notch, equal or surpassing the first season. The characters have great designs. The backgrounds really pull you into their world. The story pulls you in as all the characters play their parts well. It is great to see this world again with some great new eyes with our main characters.
We have a wonderful voice cast that make these characters come to life as Yui Makino plays Fumina, Yuma Uchida plays Yuuma and Kazumi Togashi plays Sekai Kamiki. While Togashi and Uchida have not done too much voice acting work, they pull impressive performances. Makino is joined by Masashi Hirose, who comes back a Mr. Ral for only 5 episodes, do great job adding their veteran flair to make these characters feel alive.
Hats off to series director Shinya Watada and episode 2 director Kazuki Tsunoda for pulling in two great episodes that really work with each other and move things along. The opening for the show is one of the best openings ever. BACK On returns with Cerulan for the opening theme as their hard hitting track just gets you pumped alongside Masami Obari’s Unit directions for the opening.
Overall, Gundam Build Fighters Try is off to a very impressive start as it brings new friends with some old tricks and new ones. The characters are entertaining and compelling. The battles are awesome. The designs and animation is fluid and beautiful. The stories are well paced and smart. The show is just pure fun! You can watch new episodes of Gundam Build Fighters Try, English subbed, every Wednesday on Gundaminfo Channel on You Tube. I give Gundam Build Fighters Try 5 stars … for now.
