Two people have been arrested in the separate deadly shootings that occurred Sunday afternoon and claimed the lives of two people, according to news releases from the Jackson Police Department.
Police said they have charged 21-year-old Mondarrious Miller, of Jackson, with second-degree murder in connection with the first fatal shooting. The shooting, which occurred on the 2000 block of N. Royal St., was reported at 1:26 p.m. Sunday and claimed the life of 20-year-old Justin Williams, of Jackson.
The release said Miller was arrested around 10:30 p.m. Monday on the parking lot of a Jackson hotel by Jackson police officers and the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, which is comprised of Jackson police investigators and deputy marshals.
Miller is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 8 a.m. in Jackson City Court, via video link. He remained in custody Tuesday in Madison County Jail.
The release said 23-year-old Dontavious Hendrix has been identified as the second man involved in Williams’ murder. Investigators with the JPD’s Major Crimes Bureau have signed a second-degree murder warrant for the arrest of Hendrix.
The release said investigators determined that Williams was outside talking to Hendrix and Miller just before the shooting. Shots were fired and Hendrix and Miller ran from Williams and got into a car, speeding away from the crime scene.
The motive of the murder remains under investigation.
Police said extensive search measures are being conducted to find Hendrix. He is described as being a black male, standing at 6 feet and 1 inch tall and weighing 180 pounds. His last known address was in Lanecrest Apartments, located on Lane Avenue.
The release said Hendrix is also wanted on an outstanding attachment out of Madison County Juvenile Court for failure to comply with a court order.
Police also announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy Monday night in connection with the double shooting at Parkway East Apartments, located at 33 Carver Ave, which occurred about three miles away from the first shooting and nearly four hours later.
Shomari Peterson, 17, of Jackson, was killed in the shooting and a 21-year-old man was critically injured, the release said. The shooting was reported around 5:07 p.m. Sunday.
The 21-year-old victim remains in the hospital in stable condition. His identity is not being released for safety reasons, police said.
Police said the teen suspect was taken into custody at 8:30 p.m. Monday by the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, which is made up of Jackson police investigators and deputy marshals.
The 17-year-old suspect is being held in Madison County Juvenile Detention Center, where he awaits a detention hearing in Madison County Juvenile Court, the release said. The district attorney’s office has informed police that a motion will be filed to have the teen tried as an adult.
Police said investigators are searching for a second person of interest in connection with the Parkway East Apartments shootings and are using thorough search measures to locate the person.
Police have also said the shootings don’t appear to be linked and there is no known connection between the sets of people of interest.
