By now most of America has heard of ride-share applications such as Uber and Lyft, but if you are new to this phenomenon, here is some valuable information to bring you up to speed on this all new taxi/personal driver revolution.
Ride-sharing is rapidly changing the taxi industry in an exciting new way. Companies like Lyft, Uber and Sidecar allow people to install an app on their phone where they link a credit/debit card and instantly request a driver in the area. The driver responds by accepting the request and the customer can see the driver in-route to their location on a visual map via smartphone. Once the driver arrives, they tap an “arrive” button to notify the customer. All the customer has to do is get in the vehicle and tell the driver where to go. You also have the ability to enter a destination address into the application before the driver arrives making the process even easier. The driver then drives to the destination and the paired credit/debit card is charged as soon as the trip is completed (no cash is ever accepted). Once the trip is complete, the customer is asked to rate the driver on a five star scale while the driver does the same for the customer. There is a strict five star standard that drivers must maintain, if they fall below five stars consistently, they may be locked out of the Uber or Lyft application. This ensures that only the best, safest and most personable drivers will continue to work for either company. People around the country are testing out Uber and Lift and loving it more and more.
The ride-share revolution is changing the standard of taxi services everywhere. Uber and Lyft are unique, because they allow you to drive with a neighbor, fellow student, co-worker or friend instead of the infamous taxi driver. Most drivers for Lyft, Uber or Sidecare are friendly people in the community that work on their own time for fun and offer you a piece of gum or bottle of water when you get in their perfectly maintained car. Drivers know your community because they live in your community. The experience has proven, over the past couple of years, to be much better than the average taxi cab or shuttle due to the unbeatable price, friendly service, community feel and easy to use application.
Not only is ride-sharing a great customer experience, it is an awesome driver experience. In this harsh economy, people are either looking for a job that will pay the bills or looking for something extra to do to make a little more on the side. Uber and Lyft both offer a steady stream of income for any driver who would like to participate. Drivers on either platform average $15.00 – $20.00 per hour when driving. On the driver side, the application for either platform is very straight-forward. The driver simply turns on the application when they are ready to drive and waits for a request. When the request comes in, it gives the driver the address of the customer. All the driver has to do is accept and drive to the customers location via navigation which is usually very close. Once they pick up the customer, they drive them to the destination and the app deposits the fair into the linked bank account. Drivers get paid weekly and can drive whenever they like, no schedules, vacation requests or bosses to answer to. Drive on your own time, and go for as long as you like in any given day.
There are a few small differences in driver standards between the two major ride-share companies; Lyft and Uber. Both companies do a background check on prospective drivers that takes about a week to complete. Uber requires drivers to have vehicles 2005 or newer, whereas Lyft requires 2000 or newer. Both companies require customer credit cards to be paid through the application but Lyft gives the customer an option to tip whereas Uber does not (although drivers may accept them if the customer insists). Lyft asks drivers to post suggested availability for driving time (although you don’t necessarily have to drive during those times) whereas drivers for Uber simply turn on the application and wait for a call. Uber has 4 different options for customers; Uber X, Uber Black, Uber XL and Uber SUV while Lyft has one option which is the equivalent to the lowest level Uber (Uber X). Lyft cars have a pink mustache while Uber cars have a small neon “U” Logo in the dash.
Uber and Lyft are perfect for the commuter, out-of towner, club-hopper or simple everyday person looking for a ride. The next time you need a ride, install the Uber or Lyft app on your smartphone and enjoy a free first ride on them (while promotions last). The experience is fun, convenient and friendly, (most definitely much better than your last cab ride).
People looking for a steady source of income, sign up for Uber and they’ll give you an iPhone with a pre-installed app, phone charger, dash mount and a weekly newsletter of hotspots in the area so that you can maximize profits. Turn on the application during in demand hours for surge pricing (higher priced fares) and enjoys a steady stream of requests at a higher price per ride. OR install the Lyft application on your personal phone and get requests just like Uber. Set hours of operation so that requests come to you when you are available and enjoy prime time tips during busy hours. Make some extra money on the side or make a full time living driving for Uber or Lyft (and have fun doing it). Make your own hours and work for yourself. The ride-share revolution is here, test out a free ride or apply as a driver and get involved today!
