Earning a job, becoming promoted and generating a higher salary are things everyone wants when they step into any job. While it is a universal desire, knowing what you need to do in order earn promotions and raises isn’t something everyone possesses. In the younger generation, entitlement and laziness can be among the attributes keeping a vast majority of people from succeeding, so what is a better mindset to help you achieve?
As someone who knows first hand that the more you put into your job, the more you are going to get out of it, it’s the best way anyone can attack their job day-in and day-out. This is not only true from a satisfaction standpoint, but also from a career progression frame of mind.
Sure it seems cliche to say, you get what you put into your job, and yes there are exceptions to every rule, but Ubisoft Toronto’s Jade Raymond will be among the first to tell you that those who go above and beyond what’s expected of them are going to be the first one’s to rise faster than others within their jobs.
“We have some people who have risen incredibly quickly. But to do that–that’s a thing people maybe don’t realize–it’s not by chance. It’s because you’re exceptional. If you are super passionate and exceptional at what you do, you will rise very quickly, because there’s always a shortage of great people. There are always bigger jobs that need to be done. There is a ton of challenges. So if you can rise to the opportunity, there will be that opportunity.
A lot of people think, ‘I’m not going to do that because it’s not my job, but if you give me the salary and title, I’ll do it.’ But that’s not really the way things work.
“The way things work is you do it, you do an excellent job, and then we’re gonna say you should be art director. You get the promotion by already showing that you’re able to do it. And that takes an attitude of asking yourself how you can go above and beyond, what is it you want to do and how can you prove you can do it. That’s realistically the way things work,” Raymond said.
That mindset of taking before working for it that Raymond expressed is what stops a lot of young people from achieving significant things nowadays. Who doesn’t want the valuable title and lucrative salary? Everyone does, but not everyone is willing to put in the time and sacrifice to earn these things.
Waking up every morning, willing to go the extra mile and show passion in what you do will get you so much farther than an attitude of sitting around and waiting for great opportunities to come your way. Truth be told, that will never happen unless you work for them. Giving out of a desire to be the best, not make the most money, is what will end up driving you to success the fastest.
This is something anybody can learn from. Ubisoft is literally telling people the type of person they are looking for when it comes to hiring and promoting. It’s not rocket science on any level. If you are someone that truly wants to succeed in this industry, you only need to read what Jade has to say above and take it to heart.
If that doesn’t work go with the Colossians 3:23-24 attitude, that also works quite well. E3 2014 kicks off next week and we can’t wait to see what Ubisoft and other companies have in-store.
