NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover has again produced a photographic image that, amid all the red rocks, pebbles, and rusty desert terrain, has people talking: A human-like statue perched along a hillside. In the never-ending search for extraterrestrial life or signs that it at least once existed somewhere other than Earth has produced yet again something to prick the imagination and engender hope that Earth is not a universal exception when it comes to being inhabited by living organisms.
UFO Sightings Hotspot reported Oct. 11 that not only does the statue appear to be humanoid, at least in the areas of head and torso, but that it also resembles an nearly 2,000-year-old statue of Hercules found in modern-day Iran. To add to the oddity of the figure in the image, its setting on the Martian hillside is analogous to the Iranian statue, which is carved into a mountainside.
The Mars statue find was first posted to YouTube on Oct. 9 by user Paranormal Crucible. In the posting, which is heralded as an “undeniable humanoid statue,” the user noted that “the object has humanoid features, and appears to be a female, or possibly a male with a heavy athletic build.”
The user also appears to push conspiracy theory buttons by stating that with the application of “the correct colors, replacing the ones that NASA has deliberately bleached out, we can see just how remarkable this relic truly is.” It is unknown what was deliberate or not deliberate on the part of the space agency, but, given that NASA is the recipient of a voluminous amount of data each day, color shadings and renderings are most likely simply presented as the agency receives them. And it should be noted that many UFO enthusiasts and those who believe in things paranormal are often antagonistic against the government and its agencies, often finding ample rationalizations for what they perceive to be governmental cover-ups and covert machinations. This untrusting attitude is often based on a history of misinformation and misdirection by the government. Still, with regard to the image of the human-like statue on Mars, there may be no “deliberate” attempt to hide the image, just far too many images to for NASA’s scientists to keep up with.
The user (in the narration) notes that the statue or artifact might be a “monument of some kind, possibly to a Martian king or queen who ruled over an ancient civilization on the Red Planet thousands of years ago.” That may well be, but anthropomorphizing the intent of the erectors may lead speculation in the wrong direction. Still, the opposite might be true as well.
And in going along with that theme, why not a god or goddess of some kind? Perhaps a famous scientist or philanthropist? In fact, it might not be an heroic figure at all, but maybe a vain monument of some insignificant being to themselves.
There is also mention of what looks like an animal of some sort on the statue’s “lap,” maybe even what looks like a tail trailing up the hillside. Admittedly, the statue-like object does appear to have some something segmented to its right, but that could possibly be part of the setting or even a piece of furniture (the user did mention a “throne”). The profiled object (if one dabbles in further anthropomorphization) could be reclining on an L-shaped chaise lounge.
Or, as with many of the other oddly shaped artifacts found on Mars, it could all be some fantastically wind- and weather-scoured rock formation. Where there are many who fall prey to the effects of pareidolia, which is the applied perception of objects as something familiar to the observer, skeptics are quick to see nothing other than an interesting image found among the rust-colored rocks. NASA has yet to comment on this latest intriguing find.
