On Saturday, October 11th Univision Los Angeles will conclude Univision Contigo’s award-winning Education Week with the 6th Annual “Feria de Educación” (Education Fair) taking place at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH).
The annual event, which has become one of the largest Hispanic education fairs in the nation, will be held in partnership with the University and the CSU Chancellor’s office and is free for all parents, students and educators.
Since 2008, Univision Los Angeles and CSUDH have partnered to offer this one-day education fair which features over 100 non-profit organizations, town hall meetings, workshops, and one of the nation’s largest book giveaways.
Annually attracting approximately 40,000 attendees, the event brings together parents, students, educators and community members as they exchange valuable information and resources on the full spectrum of education, beginning with Pre-K and continuing through post-graduate services.
A central component to the fair will be the first edition of Univision Contigo’s “Academias para Padres” (Parent Academies), a national tour of engaging workshops for parents, hosted in seven cities across the nation in collaboration with respected education organizations such as the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE).
The workshops will empower Hispanic parents to help their children achieve their educational and career goals with sessions on college and career readiness, financial aid, and preparing for new academic standards, among others.
Parents in attendance will receive a special Certificate of Completion and be entered in a raffle to win prizes including Southwest Airlines tickets, gift certificates and a laptop computer.
Pamela Silva Conde, co-anchor of Univision’s weekday national newsmagazine “Primer Impacto” (First Impact) and Gabriela Teissier, co-anchor of Univision 34’s “Noticias 34: Primera Edición” (Univision News 34: First Edition), will share their personal stories of how education has made a strong impact on their lives.
“Our commitment to serve our community has been part of the Univision Los Angeles history for 52 years and encompasses our television, radio and digital networks,” said Luis Patiño, senior vice president and general manager of Univision Local Media in Los Angeles. “Univision airs programming and content that seeks to entertain; but we also take our social responsibility very seriously, serving our community by offering them information and resources on topics of importance to them — above all, education. This is a fundamental part of our mission to inform and empower our community.”
For the first time in the history of “Feria de Educación,” Univision Los Angeles will be awarding two $5,000 scholarships, presented by Wells Fargo.
Two fortunate community college or University students will receive $5,000 each to help them succeed in their educational goals and become role models for their community.
In addition to the Parent Academy, Univision 34’s sixth annual education fair will offer the following resources and activities for the family:
· Free Books
· Financial Aid Experts
· Activities for all ages
· Over 100 exhibitors
· Educational Workshops including Careers In Media
· AB-540 Information
· Town halls on Mental Health and Academic Achievement
· Visualization Area
The fair will also feature an early childhood area with a reading garden and reading material give-aways sponsored by Sesame Workshop. Univision Contigo’s “Pequenos y Valiosos” (Young and Valuable) campaign encourages parents to talk, read, and sing to their toddlers everyday from the time they are born, since research shows that these interactions have a lasting positive impact on the child’s brain development.
Feria de Educación will also include a town hall titled “Mental Health” (Salud Mental) led by Ilia Calderon, co-anchor of Univision’s weeknight late evening newscast “Noticiero Univision Edición Nocturna” where community leaders will share their personal stories of challenges and inspiration that led to their success.
Guest speaker Julio Cesar Otiz, Univision 34 mental health reporter and mental health therapist, will also be in attendance. The town hall will take place in the main auditorium of Cal State University Dominguez Hills.
Launched in February 2010, Univision’s education initiative, part of the Univision Contigo empowerment platform, is the most comprehensive, multi-media education campaign in the United States.
In partnership with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Too Small to Fail, a joint initiative of Next Generation and Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, the campaign is aimed at strengthening Hispanic parents’ confidence to engage in their child’s education from the earliest years, helping their children prepare for and successfully complete post-secondary studies.
Univision Los Angeles’ 6th Annual “Feria de Educación” education fair is sponsored by Chevy and Wells Fargo.
The Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles, the Molina Foundation, JumpStart and 99cents Only Stores donated the nearly 70,000 books that will be given out during the event, aiming to exceed 2012’s number of 60,000 books.
