There are a number of ways to lose weight alternative dance is one of the hottest and it is growing with a dedicated fan base in Scottsdale at Violet Flame Studios. Their most popular classes are Belly Dancing, Pole Dance and Twerk Technique. Nyla Farraz co-owner, manager and instructor at Violet Flame Studios were one of the first in the valley to open this type of dance studio and coin the phrase “Alternative Dance Studio”. Farraz who goes by her performance name was born in Las Vegas, worked with Cirque du Soleil, and has over 20 years of experience teaching group fitness and personal training.
When Farraz and her partner started in 2004 the word stripper dance or pole dance was taboo and offensive to a lot of people. “So we decided we were going to create a series of classes that was intended to liberate women and their sexual expression but also give them another outlet for exercising and learning different types of movement and different ways to move,” Farraz said.
Twerking took center stage thanks to Miley Cyrus but there is more to this form of movement than meets the eye. At Violet Flame Studios they have revised twerking into a total core workout that gives your booty great definition.
Shaima Almutairi first year student at SCC is concerned about losing weight. Almutairi recently had a baby and she is trying to get back into her old clothes. “I’m walking once or twice a week I do some weight lifting at the gym and some cardio. I would be interested in taking a twerk technique class it is going to be much fun than lifting,” Almutairi said.
Almutairi also enjoys dancing and she is certified in Zumba and Masala Bhangra a folk dance from India infused with the flare of Bollywood.
At Violet Flame Studios pole dancing is an art form everyone starts off in the introduction class called Stripper Physics which gives a humors insight on how the laws of physics apply to the movement of your body. The goal is to work smarter than harder a common misconception with pole dance is that it is all upper body strength. It’s not it is core strength your upper body strength is a minimal part of it. Your core is everything from shoulders to knees including your glutes and thighs pole dance is the ultimate core workout.

Class schedules change every 12 -14 weeks rotating in burlesque, reggae class, strip tease class and slut strut a class that basically teaches women how to walk in heels.
