In John 15:19, Jesus Christ told His disciples that He chose them out of the world and they were not of the world. The Apostle John in 1 John 2:15-16 (NASB) explains this by saying: “Do not love the world, nor the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life. Is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away and its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lasts forever.”
These verses teach Christians that although they live in the physical world, they were not to have the thinking system or live according to the worldly value system since those values are contrary to God’s values and His principles of living found in the Bible.
In Romans 12:2, the Apostle Paul further explains this by commanding Christians: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
This means that instead of letting the worldly value system push Christians into following its values and actions; Christians are to have their mind and spiritual strength renewed as they daily read the Bible, talk to God in prayer about their problems, and have the Holy spirit wash away the spiritual contamination that can be caused by the bombardment of worldly values, fleshly desires, and demonic deceptions that are coming out of the entertainment and advertising industries and hitting Christians as they go through their daily activities.
Christians need to use the power of the Holy Spirit to give them the spiritual and verbal strength to refuse to condone or become involved in ungodly activities such as swearing, watching pornographic movies, watching demonically-inspired movies, dressing up in costumes that look like the Devil’s associates during Halloween parties, or any other activities that go against their Christian values or harm their Christian witness to the people around them.
The more Christians use their working knowledge of God’s principles, the power of the Holy Spirit, and their love for Jesus Christ, their Savior, to detect beliefs and actions which go against their Christian values and then refuse to become involved in them; the more Christians will be a brightly shining beacon of the spiritual light of God’s spiritual kingdom of light as they live and move through our modern society that is filled with many kinds of spiritual, intellectual, and moral darkness!
