Who’s ready to kick off a new month, and the brisk new Fall season, with the excitement of the Extreme Horseman’s Challenge out west at Grantsville’s scenic Pegasus Event Center?
Next weekend (Saturday, October 4), Pegasus Event Center will again host one of their ever-popular challenge events. With affordable entry fees and a variety of courses for horse and rider pairings at most any level, these competitive challenges are a terrific way to get out of the arena and enjoy some outdoor adventure. Even if you’ve never shown before, what better way to start? Riding outdoors and sharing learning experiences is a sure-fire way to help strengthen the bond and enhance your enduring partnership with your horse. The competitor’s slots fill up quickly; we recommend signing up right away if you are interested in participating.
Those wishing to ride in next week’s challenge will be asked to negotiate a variety of obstacles over 80 wide-open acres. Each horse and rider will be judged on their ability to communicate and efficiently work together. Time is a factor, so the pair who does the best in the shortest period of time will be the winner! Each challenge incorporates new and interesting features. You’ll go through gates, step across deadfall, trot through shallow water, climb and descend small hills, hop over ditches and encounter any number of animals (goats, sheep, maybe even a camel)! There are even divisions for cart-driving teams.
The extremely user-friendly Pegasus website makes it easy to learn about this event, as well as other upcoming shows and clinics, view photos of horses, competitors, and the venue, as well as looking at the variety of equine-friendly boarding opportunities at the well-appointed event center. While there’s generally a lengthy waiting list, the boarding costs are affordable and the staff will alert those on the list when and if openings come available.
Interested in schooling the course prior to the day of the event? Contact Pegasus to schedule a time to ride through the entire course prior to 8:00 p.m. on October 1, the Wednesday before the challenge. The cost is just $15 per person, per session (you’re welcome to ride it more than once if you’d like). Accustom your horse to the scenery and obstacles and give yourself a leg up on the competition! Call site manager Evan Topham at 435-830-5349, or email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange your schooling time. Simply pay online via the event center website.
Not ready to ride? How about lending a hand in the volunteer camp? All those who volunteer to judge or help with the set up tasks at four or more challenges will receive one free entry! All Utah equestrians who’ve partnered with an OTTB, remember that Pegasus now partners with the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program, who is sponsoring 2014 awards for the top placing Thoroughbred in the Pegasus Extreme Horsemanship Challenge series. The top award is $300 in cash, a High-Point ribbon and additional prize. Your Thoroughbred must be either Jockey Club papered or have a visible racing tattoo. If you do ride a qualifying TB, sign up to receive your T.I.P. number and come out to ride the challenge course. Visit the Jockey Club’s website at www.tjctip.com to learn more about the necessary qualifications for your off the track thoroughbred.
Gallop into autumn with some playful outdoor fun at the Pegasus challenge on Saturday, October 4th!
