The 33rd annual Vancouver International Film Festival kicked off with their opening gala this year at the Vancouver’s Centre for the Performing Arts on Thursday, September 25th, 2014.
Among its travellers, the red carpet found Gabrielle Reese(Award winning actress starring this year in the festival’s feature Two for One and short film Withering Heights), newcomer Dakota Daulby(starring in two films on the festival circuit this year, including Black Fly and Sitting on The Edge of Marlene), and no stranger to this column, Dylan Playfair(Leo award winning actor for his portrayal as Gordie Howe’s son in the MOW, Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story), who can be found regularly on YTV‘s Some Assembly Required.
Vancouver film festival goers paid tribute to VIFF founder, Leonard Schein this year with the presentation of being inducted into BC’s Entertainment Hall of Fame with his own star on BC’s STARWALK where Leonard will be featured in the Walk of Fame on the Granvillle Street sidewalk of downtown Vancouver as well as in the ORPHEUM lobby’s STARWALK photo Gallery.
Thirty-three years ago, when Leonard Schein initiated his plan for the idea of an International Film Festival in Vancouver, he was laughed at because(as he quotes in his honourary speech), “Canada already had an International Film Festival in Toronto, why would they need one in Vancouver?” Leonard goes on to say that he was told if people from Vancouver wanted to see a festival worthy film, they could just go to Toronto. Thank you Leonard, for not listening.
Following the presentation, a screening of Canadian filmmaker, Jean-Marc Vallee‘s feature, Wild, starring the adorable Reese Witherspoon(co-starring Laura Dern, who plays her mother) in a not so adoring role as a young woman struggling with addictions to sex, drugs and alcohol, decides on a solitary venture into the wild. The well known actress definitely had her work cut out for her as she stepped out of her comfort zone to portray this complex character.
