The 4th annual A Very Vegan Thanksgiving Potluck will take place on Sunday, November 23, 2014 from 1 to 3 pm at Total Health Foods in Wyandotte. Adventures in Veganland, a group run by VeggiePatti for vegans, vegetarians, veg-curious, and their supportive friends and family members living near SE Michigan, northern Ohio, and Windsor, Ontario, is again hosting the event.
This event has gotten bigger every year, with the last two years seeing over 40 attendees. The potluck has always been a way for people to try out new vegan recipes, share those recipes, and taste some great vegan food as healthier alternatives to traditional holiday fare. In addition to regular vegan food, the potluck also has plenty of dishes that are vegan gluten-free and raw food as well. While a few vegan restaurants and caterers have attended past events, participants would really like to see more in attendance this year.
The potluck is a great way for vegan culinary professionals to allow potential customers to taste their food and also to try out some new recipes in a safe environment. Many of the past attendees have asked for recommendations for vegan-friendly restaurants and caterers, especially around the holidays. Vegan-friendly culinary professionals are invited to bring their signature dishes, side dishes, or new dishes to the event to allow potential customers to sample the food.
Attendees are asked to bring a dish from one of the categories below that serves at least eight and adheres to the guidelines. However, people are always welcome to bring more than one dish if they desire. People are strongly encouraged to bring copies of their recipe(s) so others can recreate their dish at home on Thanksgiving!
The categories are as follows:
- Vegan: No meat, fish, seafood, dairy, eggs, or honey
- Vegan Gluten-free: All vegan guidelines plus no wheat, oats, or other gluten-containing products.
- Raw: All guidelines above, plus all food should be raw, i.e., not cooked over 105 degrees.
For those that don’t like to cook but would like to participate, you are welcome to purchase a dish from a vegan-friendly restaurant to bring along or just ask for suggestions via the Facebook page or email. To be eco-friendly, all attendees are asked to consider bringing their own non-disposal plates and utensils, as well as containers to take leftovers home.
All are welcome to the event – vegans, vegetarians, or just veg-curious folks. The event is free to the public – an RSVP is appreciated, however. Vegan restaurants and caterers are asked to email VeggiePatti to confirm attendance.
If you’ve missed the event in the past, now is your chance to try out some vegan, vegan gluten-free, or raw food. A Very Vegan Thanksgiving Potluck is an event you won’t want to miss!
