A Canadian ISIS terrorist appeared in a Vice News video, and warned the West that an attack on New York City is being planned by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The disturbing footage comes on the heels of rumors the radical group of Jihadists, namely “lone wolves,” will carry out a string of ISIL attacks in NYC subways.
One of the largest concerns the Obama Administration has in its threat against ISIS is the terror group bringing its reign of violence and mayhem back home. And perhaps, of all the recent intimations of Jihad on American soil, a video obtained by Vice News founder, Shane Smith, arguably is most worrisome.
In a YouTube video uploaded by Smith on Thursday, which has already reached nearly one million viral views, he interviews a person who is believed to be Abu Usamah Somali aka Farah Mohamed Shirdon of Canada. Evidently, he was radicalized and, like many other foreign fighters, joined the Islamic State earlier this year. He warns of an imminent attack on New York and says scores of faithful soldiers willing to give their lives in the name of Allah, are “mobilizing” and preparing for martyrdom in the Big Apple.
You may recognize Shirdon/Somali from an earlier video showing him burning up his passport after pledging to carry out a number of attacks against the United States, Western interests and “all oppressors.”
The ISIS terrorist continues his diatribe in the interview on Skype with Vice, which is reportedly without any restrictions as to what could be asked during the nearly nine minuted footage. Apparently, days before he fled Canada to join other foreign ISIS fighters, intelligence officials interviewed him, but ultimately let him go. Shirdon spoke in terms which suggested the ineptness of law enforcement and government officials in containing potentially tens of thousands of others who share the common goal in destroying the “infidels.”
“I can’t believe how someone that has extremist, terrorist ideologies, is sitting in front of you and you didn’t capture them. The next time they saw me, they saw me ripping up my passport.”
In a bit of irony, the Islamist terrorist said he was not recruited by an ISIL cell. Instead, he joined the fight on his own volition. If true, this runs counter to the State Department’s belief that so-called “lone wolves” are being recruited by extremists groups.
And perhaps the most telling part of the interview with the ISIS member is the ideology behind mass murder and beheadings. This might surprise you.
“Why are you there?” asks Smith.
“Give us our freedoms. … We want sharia. Leave us alone. When are we not under attack? [These infidels] … seem to be attacking us day and night. They don’t understand that Allah … is on our side. … Let us be under attack. We love being under attack. I want martyrdom.”
A writer with Chron countered by offering their assessment into why Western Jihadists, many of whom have no ties to Iraq or Syria, join the murderous group freely. In their opinion, while the 18-29 year-olds may have radical tendencies, are devoted to religious beliefs or have psychological dysfunctions, Western extremists join the ISIS fight simply because they are lonely and socially isolated.
Since the 911 attacks on the World Trade Center, New York has shored up its security, and many experts claim the city is safer than it’s ever been. Still, one cannot discount the fact that ISIS is planning an attack there. But is this simply a game of psychological warfare?
