As a business entrepreneurs we often have to go it alone, but if we look at the tremendous 2014 World Series victory of the San Francisco Giants baseball team we can learn a lot! The first important lesson is to believe in yourself. The SF Giants did just that. In fact their unofficial theme song is from the rock group Journey’s lead singer and mega fan, Steve Perry: “Don’t Stop Believin”. During the post season, the crowds at AT&T Park joined together and sang that tune at the end of the each 7th inning! The Giants kept their heads down and just played baseball. It’s the same in your business, keep your chin up and keep believing in yourself and what you do!
The second important lesson the Giants can teach us is to not panic. Whether it’s playing in the 7th game of the World Series against the home team or selling online during a slump, don’t panic! Get back to the fundamentals that work for your business. For eBay and Amazon sellers, keep listing, keep sourcing and stay the course. Offer good customer service, answer email questions promptly, take good photographs and stay professional, it will all work out in the end. There are always ups and downs for online sellers.
The third lesson is to not listen to the nay-sayers. Before the last game of the World Series the entire panel of sports commentators predicted that the Kansas City Royals would win, without a doubt. Yes, they are an exciting, great baseball team, but if we knew who would win a sporting event, why play? Same goes for your business, maybe friends and family tell you that you are crazy for trying to sell online. Others may want to see you fail, but do not listen to the negative words and keep on keeping on!
Another lesson that my favorite baseball team can teach us, is to treat your business associates like family. Give them respect, talk to them honestly and good things will come back to you, ten-fold. Success comes when others have your back and visa versa. Building a team within your business can add to your success. If all involved are trying to achieve the same goal, like winning the World Series, then an internet business will be successful. Can my eBay helper and I each list 10 items a day? Can we sell $1000 a week? Shoot for those goals together!
There are many connections between professional sporting teams and small internet businesses. As the business owner, you may be the manager, finding the right fit for your workers and associates. Set goals, perform calls to action, never give up, build momentum and with some hard work, you may win the equivalent to the World Series in your business!
