Political Correctness has gotten so over-the-top infantile that the term “Holier Than Thou” applies to the Secular Political Correctness Bullies as much as it ever did to their mirror image Fundamentalist Bible Thumpers.
A case in point is an article about a small group of small-minded word censors in Colorado who object to a Mexican restaurant named “Illegal Pete’s” as offensive and racist. Why? Because (a) “illegal” is an adjective that occasionally appears in front of the word “immigrant” and because (b) the political correctors have a myopic perspective.
A good example of their myopia can be found in this direct quote from the article: “One such protestor, Lucy Gonzalez, explained that she takes offense at the ‘I-word’ because she has been labeled with it.” The “I-word” to which Lucy Gonzalez refers is “illegal.”
As an exercise in gaining perspective on her perspective suppose that Ms Lucy Gonzalez’s political correctness perspective is turned around on Ms Lucy Gonzalez herself. The name Lucy, according to Wikipedia, “is an English and French feminine given name derived from Latin masculine given name Lucius.” Clearly Ms Gonzalez’s name, originating as it does from a destructive, jingoistic, patriarchal machismo appellation, is sexist, chauvinistic, antifeminist, and therefore deeply politically incorrect.
But her last name is no better. Gonzalez is just an alternative spelling of Gonzales. The famous “Come And Take It Cannon” from the Texas War of Independence is also known as the “Gonzales Cannon.” As every public school teacher and education administrator knows, as every sensitive, tolerant, inclusive, progressive advocate of “common sense gun control measures” knows “gun” is a hate speech word and “cannon,” which is just a bigger gun, is therefore just a bigger hate speech word.
See? Anyone can play the name-calling political correctness game.
So here’s today’s lesson in perspectives: Millions worldwide die from disease, starvation and endless genocidal wars, others are sold into the brutal international sex trade and millions more live their short wretched lives in hopeless poverty while privileged, pampered, coddled Americans whine about words.
Now consider this wider, non-myopic perspective on political correctness: It’s the libertarian Zero Aggression Principle that rejects coercion, intimidation and fraud no matter where in the world it comes from, and the vast majority of it comes not from name-callers and word-wailers but from psychopathic nation-state rulers who see people as nothing more than expendable fodder for their own power ambitions.
If the Lucy Gonzalezes of the world really want to “make a difference” they need to stop sniveling about political correctness and start dealing with human reality. That’s what libertarians attempt to do.
