I’m not a NFL coach by a long shot. I’m just a NFL fan in particularly a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles for a number of years now, about 39 by my count. I am not one of those fans who says goodbye when the team is at their worst. I have lived through a lot of seasons watching as other teams pulled in Super Bowl titles as the Eagles, many times laden with talent, were beaten in the playoffs by a team they were better than.
Last year when Chip Kelly came to town with his innovative high flying offense us Eagles fans were figured the season was a right off. The Eagles made the playoffs but lost to the Saints in the playoffs but there was hope for this year. During the off-season visions of high scoring games danced through this Eagles fan’s head as well as I suspect the heads of many other fans.
Then came this season. The Eagles have won a couple of games because of their defense and their two losses have come because of goal line stands which would have been the difference in the games. So where is the high flying offense this year? It seems at times that the Eagles offense gets bogged down in it’s own mistakes and penalties and at other times it appears defenses have figured out enough of the offense to shut them down.
The 2014 Eagles season has been a strange ride. The Eagles who are 6-2 and now find themselves in first place because of a Cowboys loss have been anything but high flying on offense this year.here are some possible reasons why.
Nick Foles who was injured after this Sunday’s game against the Texan’s looked stellar last year setting records and accumulating passing yards. This year, through 8 games, Nick Foles is 5-2 as a starter. He has thrown for 2,039 with 12 touchdowns but 9 interceptions, 7 more than all of last year. His current passer rating is 80.7. While his numbers are down and he doesn’t look like the same quarter back as last year fans have to remember this is only his second year as a starter as he still has a lot to learn.
Another problem with the offense this year is the fact that the offensive line who played together for all of 2013 has been riddled with injuries as well as with the suspension of Lance Johnson. The lack of consistency on the offensive line has created a lot of hurried passes and sacks for Nick Foles.
Barring being out for an injury it will be interesting to see how the rest of the season pans out for Foles and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles offense. There have been some bright spot like Jeremy Maclin and the year he is having and also Darren Sproles who is having a good year with the Eagles.
