While Kyle Busch led every lap on his way to winning the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway on Sept. 5, Chase Elliott finished second to increase his championship points lead over JR Motorsports teammate Regan Smith, who finished sixth. After 25 races, Elliott holds a 19-point lead over Smith, who remained second in the driver standings.
The JRM duo have pulled away from the competition, as the next driver in the standings, Ty Dillon, is 42 points back in third. Dillon lost points to both Elliott and Smith with a ninth-place race finish at Richmond.
The closest battle in the top-10 of the points standings is the one for fourth. Elliott Sadler currently occupies the position, while Brian Scott is only three points behind him in fifth.

After a dominant performance and race win by Busch, his No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota cut into the owner points lead held by the No. 22 Team Penske Ford team. Ryan Blaney, driver of the No. 22 at Richmond, finished fourth in Friday night’s race. After 25 races, the No. 22 has an 18-point lead on the second-place No. 54 team.
The JR Motorsports No. 9 and No. 7 Chevrolet teams are the only two teams in the top-five of the owner standings with full-time Nationwide championship-eligible drivers behind the wheel. The No. 9 is third in the standings, 96 points out of first, while the No. 7 is 115 points back in fifth. The fourth-place team in owner points is the No. 42 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet team that primarily enlists the driving duties of Sprint Cup Series rookie Kyle Larson. The No. 42 is 110 points behind the leading No. 22 team.
