Whole Foods wrote the book on healthy grocery foods and healthy eating. The Austin- based chain doesn’t sell foods containing artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives and shoppers can feel confident that the food they buy is about as pure and healthy as grocery store- purchased food can be. Starting tomorrow, June 25, 2014, Whole Foods will add another chapter to its expanding retail store portfolio when Whole Foods Champions opens to the public. Here is some background information:
Event: Whole Foods Grand Opening
Location: Whole Foods Champions, 10133 Louetta Rd., Houston, TX
Date and Time: Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 8 a.m. with a bread breaking ceremony at 7:30 a.m.
Whole Foods Champions is the 8th location in the greater Houston area and it promises much of what we already love about Whole Foods, plus several extras not found at other locations. The 44,000 square foot facility will feature 17 aisles of grocery products along with specialty sections for dairy products, produce, meat, etc., along with a beer/wine tasting bar. Like other Whole Foods locations, the emphasis will be on healthy eating, sustainability, and community support. The new location plans to reach out to local farmers and form partnerships to ensure the freshest products possible and, through Whole Foods Whole Trade Guarantee Program, the store plans to donate a portion of whole trade product sales to funding special projects in the community.
I visited the new Whole Foods Champions last week for a sneak peek media preview and I quickly noticed features at this new location that set it apart from others. I stated before that Whole Foods is all about sustainability but this new location takes things a step further in a few important ways. One is the store’s use of water. To help preserve this precious resource, the Whole Foods Champions location has a massive rain barrel to capture rain water which will then be used to water the store’s plants, trees, and grass. Another way this store is greener than usual is its use of skylights. By allowing more natural light into the store, it will help reduce energy usage as well as make for a more pleasant, naturally lighted shopping experience.
Other enhancements are certain to be a huge hit with shoppers. One that will greet you immediately when you enter the main doors next to the produce section is the in- house juicer. Customers can select their own fresh fruit then run it through the juicer for a fresh- squeezed treat. This new location even has a wood burning pizza oven and smokes its own barbecued meats in- house. Again, it’s all about natural, healthy eating and it is exemplified at this new Whole Foods store even more than usual.
Beer lovers know that Whole Foods is a great place for fine brew and the Champions location will keep this tradition going strong, with a large selection of craft beer available for take- out purchase and about 16 different beers on tap, including many local favorites and specialties. I spoke with management at the store and they said the goal is to work with local breweries and not only sell a wide selection of local beer, but also to hold special brewery- themed events in the bar area.
Besides the healthy food and interactive atmosphere, there is another good reason to visit Whole Foods Champions over the next few days. Starting tomorrow, June 25 and continuing through June 29, the store plans to donate 1 percent of its sales to a different non- profit organization each day. The recipients of this generosity include:
- June 25: Klein Independent School District Foundation
- June 26: D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek
- June 27: Barbara Bush Library Friends
- June 28: Cypress Creek Foundation for the Arts & Community Enrichment
- June 29: SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers
With so much delicious food, quality beer and wine, sustainable practices, and community support, Whole Foods Champions is a place worth visiting for your family’s grocery shopping needs. The Whole Foods legacy continues to expand in many directions in the Houston area and with eight Whole Foods locations to serve, there is now a store within twenty minutes of most area residents. Come out to this newest location, and see how the company that wrote the book on healthy eating continues to outdo itself with even more features and services than ever before.
